To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. RHoADs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rogers, in the county of Benton, State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knockdown Coops; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to coops for shipping poultry, and more particularly to the class of knockdown coops, the object of the invention being to provide a construction which will be cheap and simple and likewise durable, which when set up may have the form of a two-story coop, and in which the parts will be securely held together, but may be readily disconnected, a further object of the invention being to provide a construction wherein the top and bottom members when disconnected may be telescopcd one within the other.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a coop embodying the present invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the coop. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken longitudinally through the coop. Fig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal section through the coop with the members disposed one within the other.
Referring now to the drawings, the present coop comprises upper and lower members and an intermediate partition. The upper member consists of a frame 5 of substantially rectangular shape and to which are riveted or otherwise secured the outwardlyturned end portions of longitudinal and transverse U-shaped metal straps 6 and .7, respectively, these metal straps having a basket arrangement, as illustrated, so that there is, in effect, formed a metallic basket having an outwardly-projecting flange at its edge formed by the frame 5.
The lower member of the coop comprises also a substantially rectangular frame 10, against which are riveted or otherwise secured the outwardly-turned end portions of longitudinal and transverse iron straps 11 and 12, respectively, these upper and lower members being in all respects similar and of the same dimensions, so that they may be disposed with their rectangular frames 5 and 10, respectively, coincident. The frames 5 and have perforations 13 and14 therethrough, which are adapted to aline, and through these perforations may be engaged bolts or wires, or, as illustrated, nails 14 may be driven through the perforations and clenched.
In connection with the upper and lower basket-shaped members is employed an intermediate horizontal partition or floor 15, having perforatons 16 at its edges for alinement with the perforations of the rectangular frame to receive the fastening-nails or other means in connection with said perforations.
As illustrated, one of the transverse straps of each of the upper and lower basket-shaped members terminates short of the rectangular frame of that member and is secured to a cross-bar 16, connected to the transverse straps at either side of the middle strap. There is thus formed a door-opening which is provided with a door 17.
As illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawings, when the coop is to be shipped empty the upper member is telescoped into the lower member and the partition is disposed upon the rectangular frame of the upper member, the parts being held together by nails, as illustrated, or by wires or bolts. It will be noted that the upper and lower members are tapered away from their rectangular frames to permit of telescoping one into the other. a
