Beit known that I, HENRY Knoc., Sr., o f Washington, in the county of Franklin and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Folding Box, of which thefollowing is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved folding box which can be folded very compactly and can be erected very easily and rapidly. l

` The invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in whidi similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the ligures. Figure 1 is a longitudinal elevation of my improved folding box, parts being broken out and others shown in section, the box being erected. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the same, parts being broken out and others shown in section. Fig. `3 is an end View of the same. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view of one end of the box, the box being shown folded and parts being broken out.

To a bottom board, A, two side boards, B, and two end boards, C, are fastened, the end boards being braced and stiffenedby metal straps C', having their ends secured to the upper edge of the end boards,and thesaid strips being passedaround the end and bottom edges of the said end pieces, as shown. The cover D is provided with two side pieces, E,and two end pieces, F, also. braced and stiffenedby straps. The end pieces of the top and bottom are considerably thicker than the side pieces. Each removable side G of the box has a vertical strip, H, secured to its inner surface a short distance from each end, to form a shoulder, H against which shoulders the end edges of the removable end pieces, J, abut, and at the :middle each side piece, G, is provided on its inner surface with two vertical strips, L, forming a vertical groove, L', for receivingthe end ofthe central partition, M, which is strengthened at the to and bottom edges by strips M', nailed to the same. The partition is provided with a series of apertures, m, for ventilation. The strips H and L are nailed transversely to the grain of need not be placed in the box. The end pieces, l

C, of the bottom are provided in the upper surfaces with pins d,which are adapted to pass into corresponding apertures in the bottom edges of the end pieces, F, of the cover. A recess, O, is formed in the outer side of' each piece O of the bottom, at or near the middle `of the same, and an aperture, P, extends from the upper edge of each piece C to the said recess O. A sliding bolt, Q, is held in each recess, preferably on the upper edge of the same; or

in place of the sliding bolt, a hook or analogous device can be pivoted in the said recess. A transverse strip, R, is nailed on the upper surface of the cover D, at each end of the same,

R', in the middle. An aperture, u, extends vertically through the end piece, F, of the cover at the middle. Each of the pieces C of the bottom is provided at the middle of the inner edge with a recess, t, for receiving adink of a chain, S,when the box is folded, as shown in Fig. 4. l

If the'box is to be used for receiving eggs, fruit, or any other articles that are to be packed in boxes, the sides G are `placed on the bottom, and the ends J are placed against the end pieces ot' the bottom, the end edges of the said ends J resting against the shoulders H', formed at the ends of the sides G. The partition M is placed in the box, the end edges of the said partition" passing into the grooves L', formed by the strips or boards L in the inner surface of the sides G. The cover D is then placed on the upper edges of the sides G and ends J ,the lower link of the chain Sis passed throughthe aperture P, and the sliding bolt Q is then passed through the lower end of the said link, for'the purpose of holding the link to theend pieces,

The upper end of the chain S issecured to a screw-bolt, W, which is passed through the aperture n in the corresponding Like strips, J are secured to the IOO end piece, F, of the cover, the threaded end of the bolt projecting above the upper surface of the cover. A winged nut, T, is then screwed on the threaded end of the bolt and drawn up 5 tight until the chain S is drawn taut, and thereby the bottom A and the cover D are pressed irmly against the bottom and top edges of the sides, ends, and intermediate partition of the box.

One fastening device, consisting of a chain, S, and hook, can be arranged at each end of the box; or two or more such fastening devices can be arranged at each end ofthe box, as circumstanees may require. i

If the box is to be emptied and not in use', the sides, ends, and intermediate partition are placed flat on the bottom, and the cover D is placed on the bottom section in such a man` ner that the end piece of the cover rests on the end pieces of the bottom, the bolt Q is passed through the eye in the lower end of the bolt W, and the nut T is screwed on the bolt, for the purpose of drawing the bottom and cover of the box together.

When the box is folded in the manner just described, the pins d on the upper surfaces of the end pieces of the bottom passinto the corresponding apertures in the bottom surfaces of the end pieces of the cover.

If desired, the box can be provided with more than one transverse partition. The sides and ends can be made of greater or less thickness, according to the desired strength of the box. The links of the chain S can be made of greater or less length, as may be desired.

The sides of the box can be made of slats, wire-netting, or perforated plates or boards, so that the box can be used as a chicken-coop or bird-cage; or the sides can be made of glass, s'o that the box can be used as a show-case,and can be provided with ornamental caps, moldings, Stc. i

I-Iaving thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a folding box, the combination, with the bottom section and cover, of removable sides and ends, a chain, screw-bolt, and nut for pressing the bottom and cover against the bottom and top edges o`f the said sides and ends, and a fasteningdevice in the end pieces of the bottom section, for thepurpose of holding the lower end of the chain, substantially as herein shown and described.

2. In a folding box, the combination, with removable sides and ends, of a bottom having end pieces, each provided with a vertical aperture, and with a recess containing a fastening device, a cover provided with end pieces having vertical apertures, the chain S, the screw-bolt W, provided with a loop or eye at its lower end, and of the nut T, screwed on the end of the bolt, substantially as herein shown and described. f
