Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NATHANIEL K. FAIRBANK, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN PACKAGES FOR TRANSPRTING LARD, &c.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 150,852, dated May 12,1874; application filed February 28, 1874.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, NATHANIEL K. FAIE- BANK, of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain Improvements in Lard-Packages, of which the following is a specification:
'My invention has for its object the construction of a package in which lard or other suit able substances canV be transported, either over land or sea, with safety and economy.
In the construction of my package I use pails or buckets D, or any suitable vessel, and cover each of said pails with a Wooden cover, A, which is formed with a shoulder on the under side at the edge, as shown in Figure 3, which is an enlarged vertical sectional view of a part of one of the covers. The shoulder rests upon the top edge of the pail. The pails rest one upon the other, as shown in Fig. 2. Upon the top of each pail is cut a circular crease, as shown at B at Fig. 3, and B at Fig. 1.
Fig. lis a top view of the cover I use, in which B is the crease referred to. The lower end of the pail rests in this crease in the cover of the bottom pail. This crease might be done away with, aud cleats nailed on the top of the cover, against which the bottom of the pail could rest 5 but I prefer the crease. The cover of the top pail has no crease. In this Way I mount one pail above another, to the number desired. I then place them in a rack made of four strips, as shown at E E, Fig. 2, extending down the side of the pails, and the ends of which are fastened to the ends of cross-bars extending at right angles across the -upper and lower ends of the series of pails, as previously mentioned.' Around the center of the package I place a band, F, Fig. 2, of suitable material, and fasten it to each strip. This serves the purpose of keeping the strips from spreading or bilging. This might be done away With, but I prefer to use it.
I make these pails of different sizes, thus holding more or less, as I may desire, as in some markets the demand is for packages holding different amounts from others.
A I have found by actual experience that this kind of a package is the'safest and most reliable, and most economical, for sending lard to foreign countries, of any that is known.
For the British market I pack twenty-eight pounds in each pail, and four pails in each package, thus making just a British hundred Weight.
I do not limit myself to the precise number of four pails or buckets in each package, as I can use a greater or less number.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The grooved cover A B, for use in the manner and for the purpose herein specified. 2. The combination of the pails D A, side pieces E, cross-heads O, and band F, as and for the purposes set forth.
