UNrrnn STATES PATENT @rricn.
ANTHONY DAUL, OF J AMAIGA, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR- OF ONE-HALF TO GAR-L WLvoKENs,
FOLDING BASKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters OF SAME PLACE.
Patent No. 295,363, dated March 18, 1884.
Application filed August 17, 1883. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, ANTHONY DAUL, of
Jamaica, in the county of Queens and State of New York, haveinvented a new and Improved Folding Basket, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved basket which can be folded very compactly and rapidly and can be erected rapidly for use.
The invention consists in a folding basket constructed with a bottom,to the oppositeedges of which the front and back are hinged, the ends of the basket being hinged to the ends of the front, and the cover is made of two halves hinged to the upper edge of the back. The basket is provided with handles having hooks, by means of which they can be fastened to the basket when the same is erected or folded.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, in which similar letters oftreference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a perspective view of my improved folding basket, showing it erected for use. 2is a perspective view of the same, showing it folded. Fig. 3 is an end view of the same, showing it partly erected. Fig. i is a perspective view of a wickei work basket, showingit erected for use.
The front A and the back B of the basket are-hinged to the bottom 0 at opposite edges,
and the ends D are hinged to the edges of the front A. The covers E, of which there are two, each half the length of the basket, are hinged to the upper edge of the back 13. 'When the basket is folded, the inner surfaces of the ends 1) are folded against the inner surfaces of the front A, the front surface of which is folded against the under surface of the bottom 0. The upper-surfaces of the covers Eare folded against the outer surface of the back B, the inner surface of which is folded against the upper surface of the bottom C. The covers are provided with hasps or loops F, through which hooks G or other suitable fastening on the front A can he passed; or the covers can be provided with any other suitable devices for locking them. The ends D are each provided in the inner surface and at the free end, near the top, with a l hook, G, adapted to be passed into a staple, loop, ring, or eye, H, projecting from the inner surface of the back B at the ends. Each end is provided on the inner surface, at the free end and at the bottom edge, with asliding bolt, J, adapted to be passed into an aperture in the upper surface of the bottom 0 atthe ends. The front A and back B are provided on the outer surfaces, at short distances below the upper edges, with two loops, rings, eyes, or staples, K, and the ends D are each provided with like rings or loops, L, on the outer surface, a short distance below the upper edge. The covers E are each provided with loops or rings L, on the under surface, a short distance from the free edge. Handles M are provided at the ends with snap-hooks N, plain hooks, or analogous devices, and when the basket is erected the hooks N are hooked on the rings or staples K K on the front and back, and thus permit of can rying the basket very readily. lVhen the has ket is folded, the handles M are crossed and the hooks N are crossed and hooked in the rings or loops L L on the ends and covers, and thus permit of carrying the basket very readily when folded.
The basket can be made of wood, metal, wicker-work, &c., the hinges, 820., being made the material of which the basket is made.
The handles can be made of leather, wickerwork, chains, webbing, &c.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A folding basket made, substantially as herein shown and described, with the front and back hinged to the opposite edges of the bottom, the ends hinged to the ends of the front, and the cover made of two halves hinged to the upper edge of the back, as set forth.
2. A folding basket constructed with a front hinged to the front edge of the bottom and adapted to be folded against the under surface of the same, a back hinged to the rear edge of the bottom and adapted to be folded on the upper surface of the same, ends hinged to the ends of the front and adapted to be folded against the inner surface of the same, and two cover-sections hinged to the upper edge of the back and adapted to be folded against the to correspond with and adapt themselves to rear surface of the same, substanti ally'as herein shown and described.
3. In a folding basket, the combination, with the bottom 0,0f the frontA and back B, hinged to the same, the ends D, hinged to the ends of the front, the covers E, hinged to the back, the hooks G on the ends, and the eyes or loops H on the back, substantially as herein shown and described.
4. In a folding basket, the combinatiomwith the bottom 0, of the front A and back B, hinged to the same, the ends D, hinged to the front, the covers E, hinged to the back, the hooks G on the ends D, the loops or eyes H on the back, and the sliding bolts J on the ends, substantially as herein shown and described.
5. In a folding basket, the co1nbination,wit-h the bottom 0, of the front A and the back B,
hinged to the same, the ends D, hinged to the front, the covers E, hinged to the back, the rings or loops L on the ends, the rings or loops L on the covers, and the handles M, substantially as herein shown and described.
6. In a folding basket, the eor11bination,with the bottom C, of the front A and the back 13, hinged to the same, the ends D, hinged to the front, the covers E, hinged to the back, the loops or rings K on the front and back, the rings or loops L on the ends I), the rings or loops L on the covers E, and the handles M, substantially as herein shown-and described.
ANTHONY DAUL.
