ron'rABLE AND KNOCKDOWN STORAGE-BIN.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented uly 22, 1919.
Application filed J 1115 22, 1918. 'Seria1No.246 201.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, MAXWELL B. FITCH,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Corona, in the county of Riverside and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Portable and Knockdown Storage-Bins, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to portable and knock-clown storage bins and consists of the novel features herein shown, described and claimed; I
My object is to provide footings, interlocking wall plates, and wall plate supporting bars, so that a temporary bin'may be constructed of any desired ground area and of any height, used the desired length of time, and then torn down, to be re-set up in another place and of any desired different area and height.
My present invention is an alternative or modification of the invention shown in my patent dated May 7, 1918, No. 1,265,442.
' Figure 1 is an elevation of a knock-down storage bin embodying the principles of my invention. 7
Fig. 2 is a' vertical sectional detail upon an enlarged scale and taken upon the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary horizontal sectional detail upon the line 3-3 of Fig. 1 and upon an enlarged scale.
Fig. 4 is 'a perspective detail showing a fragment of the bin.
In preparing to construct a storage bin in accordance with the principles of my invention, the ground will be leveled to form a suitable floor forthe material to be stored, and the footings 1 are then arranged upon the floor in a circle surrounding the storage area. This circle may be comparatively large or small, as desired.
The footings 1 each comprise a base block 2 of wood or other material, a base plate 3 of metal secured to the upper face of the base block, and a retaining flange 4 extending upwardly from the base plate 3. I A tier of wall plates 5 is placed end to end upon the footings 1 inside of the flanges 4, there being interlocking hooks Sand 7 upon the vertical edges of the plates, the hook 6 of one plate interlocking with the hook 7 of the next plate so as to make an endless band surrounding the storage area.
A row of supporting bars 8 is then placed upon the upper edges of the wall plates 5.
The supporting bars 8 are curved to make the desired circle and said bars are Z-shaped in cross-section so as to form seats 9 for receiving the upper edges of the plates 5 and seats 10 for receiving the lower edges of the next tier of'wall plates 11.
The tierof wall plates'll is identical with the tier of wall plates 5 except that the band formed is slightly smaller.
, Then a second series of wall plate supporting. bars '12 is applied to the upper edges of the wall plates 11. The wall plate supporting bars 8 and 12 may be substantially alike,
and if they arealike it is only necessary to turn them end for end so that the seats 9 will open upwardly and the seats 10 will open downwardly.
Then a third series of wall plates 13, identical with the wall plates 5, is applied, with their lower edges fitting in the seats 9.
Then a third series of wall supporting bars 14, identical with the wall supporting bars 8, is applied to the upper edges of the wall plates 13, and a fourth series of wall plates 15, identical with the plates 11, is applied to the supporting bars 14, and so on to the desired height.
In constructing the wall plates 5, 11, 13 and 15, notches 16 are cut in the corners of the plates where the ends of the seams 17 would come, so that the ends of the seams are cut away to clear the wall supporting bars 8, 12, 14, etc.
My knock-down storage bin may be used for temporarily storing grain at threshing time and it may also be used for storing sand, plaster, crushed rock, coal, and other material in doing contract work Where the material is to be stored for a short time and then used and the bins no longer needed, and
"the bin may be used for many other purposes, depending upon the location and the requirements.
Various changes may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention as claimed.
I claim:
1. A series of wall plates, and interlocking hooks formed upon the meeting edges of the wall plates and connecting the plates together to form a continuous band; the plates being notched out at the ends of the seams formed by the interlocking hooks.
2. A knock-down bin comprising a series of rectangular wall plates having the edges of their adjacent vertical sides rolled upon themselves to form an interlocking joint, said series forming a continuous band and a series of Wall plate supporting bars 2- shaped in cross section to engage the upper ends of said wall plates and the lower ends of the series of wall plates immediately above the lower series of wall plates, the upper ends of the vertical joints being cut away whereby the supporting bars may form a continuous smooth band joining the upper and lower edges of adjacent series of wall plates.
3. A knock-clown bin comprising a plurality of series of wall plates, each series of said wall plates having their vertical edges interlocking to form a continuous band, a series of supporting bars Z-shaped in cross section engaging and holding in place a pair of adjacent bands, said bars forming a continuous band, the ends of each bar abutting the ends of adjacent bars, said bars being arranged in break-joint relation with the interlocking joints of the Wall plates. 1
4:. A knockdown bin comprising a plurality of series of wall plates, each series of said wall plates having interlocking vertical edges and forming a continuous band, adjacent bands of wall plates being arranged in break-joint relation to each other, and a series of supporting bars Z-shaped in cross section supporting adjacent bands of wall plates and forming a continuous band, the ends of said bars abutting the ends of the adjacent bars and the joints in the said band of bars being in break-joint relation MAXWELL Q FITCH.
