UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HERMAN E.- vANcE, or COLUMBUS, omo. HSLATY'FORCONSTIRUCTING FIREPROOFI BLIND-S.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Iatented. Sept. 26, 1905.
Application filed February 8, 1905. Sen'aINo. 244,724..
-To all whom it mag concern: Beitknown that I, HERMAN EVANOE, a'citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus,
through a curtain in-which the slats are wholly of metal.
The invention is embodied in the improved construct-ion hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view of a slat and two portions of slats joined thereto, as in a curtainj Fig. 2 is a likeview showing how the body of the slat can be reinforced. Fig. 3 is a face view of a piece of slat looking at its in-.
ner or concaved side.
In the several views, 1 designates the body portion of the slat. This body portion is made in strip form, chiefly of papier-mdch, uralite, (the base ofwhich is asbestos fiber,) or any, other good non-metallic fire-resisting, non-radiating, slow-burning, or'heat-retardent materialthat is adapted to be pressed, molded,
or otherwise shaped to form such. body portion; but in some instances to promote the integrity of the body material I propose to embed, mold, or otherwise secure in'the bodystrip a reinforcing-strip 1", as of wire-cloth, into the interstices of which the material of the body penetrates or mixes to form therewith a practically integral structure.
In the opposite edges of the body portion 1 of the slat are secured metallic strips 2 andlQ, which can be bent to form hooks 20 and shoulders 21, standing across the mouths of the hooks like those illustrated in the United States Letters Patent issued to W. R Kinnear, No.
572,014, dated November 24, 1896 but other means for joining the slats together can be used in connection with my improvement.
These metallic hooking strips can be em-' bedded in or secured to the body portion of the slat at the time tne body portion is made or they can be applied after they are madeas, for example, by inserting them in kerfs made in the edges of the body portion and securing them therein byv rivets 3, as indicated in the drawings.
Some changes can be made withoutdeparting from the gist of the invention. 7
WhatI claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a fireproof blind or curtain a slat having a body portion composed. of non-metallic heat retardent 0r resisting material and its edges made of separate metallic devices added thereto for joining the slat to other slats.
2. In a fireproof blind or curtain a slat having a body portion composed chiefly of a nonmetallic heat retardent or resisting material with a reinforcing material of metal embedded therein and its edges formed of separate metallic devices added thereto for joining the slat to other slats.
3. In a fireproof blind or curtain a slat having "a body portion composed of a non-metallic heat retardent or resisting material and its edges made of separate metallic strips added thereto bent to form hooks for engagement with other slats.
4:. In a fireproof blind or curtain a slat hav-' ing a body portion composed of a non-metallic heat retardent or resisting material and provided at its edges with separate metallic strips added thereto each having one of its edges embedded in or secured to the body portion with the exposed portions bent to form hooks for engagement with other slats.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature ir presence of two witnesses.
' HERMAN VANCE.
