T0 all whom t may concern y Be it known that I, ARVID J. MALMBnRG, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Doors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to metallic doors and consists in certain novel and useful improvements in the same, and isa division of my application, Serial No. 7 99,889 filed Nov. 8, 1913.
My invention comprises the novel fea-- tures hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawing in which I have illustrated one formin which the invention maybe embodied, which has been selected by me for the purpose of illustra-ting the invention, and the said invention is fully disclosed in the following description and claim.
Referring to the said drawing: Figure 1 is an elevation of the interior of one side of a metallic door, showing one means of connecting the side stile and cross rail plates and omitting the panels. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the inner side of the top cross rail plate and a portion of the plates of the side stiles, showing the joining of the cross railsl and side stiles by spot welding. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on line 3 3 of` Fig. 1.
The object of my invention is to provide a metallic door, adapted especially for use in fire proof buildings and the like, to prevent a conflagration from spreading, and thereby confine a fire to one section or room of a building. It is to be understood, however, that the device may also be employed in other relations in which its use will be advantageous or desirable.
A further object of my invention is to provide a connection between the side stiles and cross rails which will be practically indestructible in use and which will present a neat and attractive appearance from the eX- terior of the door.
In carrying out my invention, I form each of the side Stiles of each side of the door of one integral plate, which is died or pressed on one edge to form a molding and is bent on its opposite edge to form one side of the lateral edges of the door. These moldings are provided along their length 'with slots in which flanges on cross rail plates are inserted and secured by means of spot welding or solder.
In the drawings, the reference character A represents one side of the door and B the other side. Each ofthe sides of the door is composed of side stile plates 1, cross rail plates 2 and panels (not shown) to which the cross rail and stile plates are connected. The stile plates l are provided on their inner edges with stepped molding 3 and on their outer edges with bent anges 4, each of which forms one-half of the lateral edges of the completed door. These bent flanges l are connected by means of screws 5 to a bar frame 5a which extend around the interior edges of the door and forms a reinforcing frame for the door. The moldings 3 are provided at periods along their length and adjacent to the plates 1 with slots 6 and shoulders 7 for a purpose about to be described. The cross rail plates 2 are provided on their lateral edges with flanges 8, which are bent at right angles to said cross rail plates and pass through the slots 6 and abut against the shoulders 7 to prevent lateral displacement. These flanges 8 may be secured on the interior of the door by means of solder 9, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, which entirely incloses the anges 8 and enters the space between the flanges and the walls of the slots 6, whereby a neat and secure joint is provided.
Instead of securing the flanges 8 by means of solder, as just described, the flanges may be secured by spot Welding as shown in Fig. 2. In this case metallic fillets 9 are placed on the inner side of the Stiles adjacent the slots 6 and which when fused become a part of the pieces welded together, where the electrodes, or other heating agency, are placed in contact with the pieces to be welded, thus making a welded joint. This form of welding prevents the usual warping or buckling of the pieces welded and by this arrangement, a strong and practically indestructible connection is made and one which presents a neat appearance from the exterior of the door.
