@my I@ Zufma,
Interposed between the side walls of the upper and lower rails are outwardly-facing channel bars 32 around which the outer marginal portions of said'sideA walls are bent to'lie against the inner faces of the sides of said channel and against the faces of the inner walls thereof and fitting between the re-bent portions of said side walls are inwardly-facing channel bars 33 having their edges bearing against the extremities of the side walls of said rails and the outer faces thereof flush with the bent edges of said side walls. Screws 34 are passed through the channel bars 33 and take into the channel bars 32, thus securely locking the -two channels together and fastening the wallsof the rails at their outer edges between said channels.
The intermediate rail l1 is formed of two strips of metal 35 and 36, one at each side of the panel, the marginal portions of the strips being bent o5. rolled to form moldings 37 corresponding to the moldings of the stiles and the upper and lower rails and like said upper and lower rails they have angular portions 38 reinforced by metallic bars 39 welded or otherwise fastened to the panel Walls and to which the angular portions of said intermediate rail are welded or otherwise fastened.
Within the space inclosed by this intern mediate rail we reinforce the panel walls to prevent their bulging out or being pressed inl and we preferably employ for this purpose a Z-bar 40 which we secure to the inner face of one of the panel walls, and to' the inner face of the other panel wall we secure a plate 4l having an offset portion 42 sepa'- rated by a space from the panel wall to which it 1s secured and in which space tits the free flange 43 of the Z-bar. Between the panel walls and the opposite side walls of the intermediate rail we interpose reinforcing bars 44 in the form of Z-bars, one of the parallel flanges of each bar being welded or otherwise secured to the inner face of the adjacent side wall of the rail and the other tlange to the coperating panel wall. For the purpose of permitting these reinforcing bars 44 to be spot welded, the panel Walls are provided with openings 45, 4G directly above said bars so that a part of a spot Welder may be passed through these openings to fasten the 'outer flanges of the said bars to the panel walls.
Aselearly shown in Fig. 7, the channel bars 32, 33 extend to the outer edge walls` of the` stiles and where the ends of the rails meet the stiles, the latter and the molding i8 are cut away, as at 47, the molding of the stiles and rails being cut obliquely where they meet, as at 48, to make a inished joint. lit is to be noted therefore that by cutting the molding of the stiles and a portion of the stiles away where the upper and lower Lieeaa rails join them, the panel walls are separated from the side walls of the stile within the rails, as at 49, to provide free ends for the panel walls which permit of readily bending them into channel shape, as shown at 22, 23, and also brings the upper and lower edges of the panel walls into the rails a sufcient distance to provide space for the placing of the" channels r32, 33 between the side walls of the rails and stiles.
Having thus described our invention, what We claim is,-
l; A-metallie door or the like having hollow stiles and rails, a panel bounded by said stiles and rails and extending into said rails, said panel comprising two panel members bent upon themselves near opposite ends to provide projecting portions within said rails against which the sides of the latter bear, said panel portions being spaced from the sides of'said rails at opposite sides of said projecting portions.
2. A metallic door or the like having hollow stiles and rails, and a panel bounded by said stiles and rails and comprising two panel members, the metal of said panel extending into said rails and each panel member being bent upon itself to provide channel-shaped projecting portions against which the 4side walls of said rails bear, said panel being spaced from the sides of said rails at opposite sides of said channel-shaped projecting portions.
3. A metallic door or the like comprising hollow stiles and rails, and a panel bounded by said stiles and rails and having the ends of the material forming said panel extending into said rails and bent upon itself transversely near opposite ends to provide projecting channels against which the sides of said rails bear and are secured, said panel being spaced from the sides of said rails atlopposite sides of said projecting channe s.
4. A metallic door or the like having hollow stiles and rails, and a panel bounded by said stiles and rails and comprising two panel walls separated from each other, one end of each panel wall being bent at right angles to provide a spacing iiange and the g other ends of said walls being re-bent upon themselves to embrace the flanged end of the coperating wall.
5. A metallic door or the like having hollow stiles and rails, and a panel bounded by said panel comprising said stiles and rails, two panel walls separated from each other and one wall being bent at right angles at its lower end and the other at its upper end to form spacing flanges, said first-mentioned c wall having its upper end re-bent to embrace the upper end of the other wall and said other wall having its lower end re-bent to embrace the lower end of said first-mentioned wall, and screws taking into the re nieaaaa bent end ot' said panel walls and entering the Spacing flanges ot the coperating wall.
6. A metallic door or the like comprising hollow Stiles and rails, and a panel bounded by said Stiles and rails, Said rails being 'formed of sheet metal to provideI opposite walls, a channel bar between the Side walls ot' each rail, said rails having their outer marginal portions re-bent to tit around the side walls ofsaid channel bar and against the inner wall of the same, a second channel bar fitting between and in Contact with the re-bent portions of said side walls, and means tor connecting Said channel bars together.
Y. A metallic door or the like having hollow Stiles and rails, and a panel bounded by said Stiles and rails, Said panel and Stiles having opposite side walls separated by an intervening space and each panel wall being in piece with the Side walls of the Stiles on the Same side of the door, the upper ends otl Said panel walls being Separated from the upper ends of said Stiles and being bent transversely to provide opposite projecting portions, and rails fitting over the ends of said panel walls and in Contact with the opposite projecting portions thereof.
8. A metallic door or the like having hollow Stiles and rails, and a panel bounded by said Stiles and rails, said panel and Stiles comprising opposite side walls separated by an interveing space, and projecting interlocking members on the inner faces of Said panel walls.
9. A metallic door or the like having hollow Stiles and rails, and a panel bounded by said Stiles and rails, Said panel and Stiles comprising opposite side walls Separated by an intervening space, one of said panel walls having a transversely disposed Z bar secured to its inner face and the other wall having a bar provided with an oil-set portion between which and the panel wall from which it extends the 'bar of the opposite panel wall iS engaged.
l0. A. metallic door or the like comprising hollow Stiles and rails, an intermediate rail, and a panel bounded by said Stiles and rails.
the Stiles, rails and panel having opposite Side walls separated by 'an intervening space, a filling in the space between the walls of said panel, interlocking elements secured to the inner t'aces of said panel walls, and reinforcing bars between said panel walls and. the side walls of Said intermediate rail.
11. A metallic door or the like comprising hollow Stiles, an upper, a lower, and intermediate rail, and panels bounded by said Stiles and rails, said panel comprising two panel walls Separated by an intervening space, said upper and lower rails litting over the ends of said panel walls and said intermediate rail comprising two parts applied to opposite sides of said panel walls, shaped elements between the panel walls and the side walls of said intermediate rail and secured to both, interlocking elements secured to the inner faces of said panel walls, and means provided in the construction of said panel walls to permit the insertion of a welding instrument therebetween to weld said Z Shaped elements in. place.
12. A metallic door having two separated panel walls provided with openings, an intermediate rail comprising two parts applied to the outer opposite edges of said panel walls and covering said openings, a i7. bar secured to the inner tace of one et Said panel walls and having one of its flanges free, a bar secured to the inner tace ot the other panel wall and oil-Set between its marginal portions to engage the tree flange of said 2 bar, and a Zi bar between each panel wall and the adjacent side wall of the intermediate rail, said last-mentioned 2 bars being adjacent the openings in said panel walls to permit ott securely welding them in position.
