' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELIPHALET ARMSTRONG, OF BELLVILLE, OHIO.
METALLIC CEILING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 521,696, dated June 19,1892.
- Application filed March 15, 1894. Serial No. 503,701. (No model.)
hereby declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in metallic ceilings, the object being to provide a. sectional metallic ceiling of such construe-- tion that it shall be of small initial cost in its manufacture, one that can be quickly and easily applied and one that can be attached and detached without injury to either the plaster or metallic ceiling.
Metal ceilings as usually constructed are nailed. to the ceiling proper and great difficulty is experienced whenever it becomes necessary to remove one of the panels. To remedy this defect is the main object of my invention and with this aim in view my invention consists essentially of a series of panels having flanged edges, a clamping strip for uniting said flanges and a clamping rosette for each set of four panels, for binding the clamping strips in place.
My invention consists also in certain detail of construction and relative arrangement of parts as Will be'hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view of my improved metallicceiling. Fi 2 is a section on line 2 2 Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the rosette. Fig. 4 is an inverted view of the same. View of one ofthe panels. Fig. 6 is a detail view of the clamping strip.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the ceiling proper and B the fur-ring stripssecured thereto. If desired these strips can be omitted. My ceiling I construct of a series of metallic panels 0 (preferably of steel) each panel having a suitable molding c and at the edges they are bent or flanged as clearly shown at 0'. These panels are arran ed in sets of four as shown so that the side anges Fig. 5 is a detailcontact with each other. Over each set of contacting flanges I place aclamping strip or cap D also of metal and U-shaped as shown so that the flanges are drawn close together, and the joint consisting of four thicknesses of metal is practically dust and water proof.
In order to hold the clamping strips or caps in place I provide a rosette E for each set of caps said rosette consisting of a central body portion e having an aperture 6' and the clamping wings e also U-shaped in cross section and extending some distance from the bodyportion e. These wings envelop the end portions of the clamping strip or cap and hold them securely in place, the rosettes being securely fastened to the strips B or other backing by means of screws F. By using a screw in connection with the rosette and strips constructed in this manner I gain a great advantage as the rosette can be drawn as tight as desired Without injury to either the ceiling proper or any of the metallic panels.
The strips or caps securely bind the panels together and as the rosette-holds the strips in place it will be seen that the entire structure canbe quickly attached or detached, and that without injury to any of the parts.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a metallic ceiling a clamping rosette having an apertured body portion, and the U -shaped arms extending therefrom, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. In ametallicceilingthe combination with the strips of the panels having side flanges, the U -shaped clamping strips'or caps adapted to bind the adjacent or abutting flanges together the clamping rosette having an apertured 'body portion and U-shaped wings to receive the clamping strips or caps, and the screw passing through the aperture in the rosette into the strip, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signaturein presence of two witnesses.
