NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE II. ENNIS, OF TROY, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO JESSIE D. ENNIS AND HENRY R. GARDNER, OF SAME PLACE.
METAL CEILING AND SIDE-WALL PLATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 628,579, dated July 11, 1899. Application filed September 12,1898. Serial No. 690,715. (No model.)
To all whmn it may concern.-
Beit known that I, GEORGE H. ENNIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal Ceiling and Side-Wall Plates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. The present invention has reference to that class of sheet-metalplates especially adapted I 5 for the construction of ceilings or side walls in the interior ofbuildings; and the Object thereof is to provide a simple and effective plate of the above character, whereby the method of securing and fastening them together to form the ceiling or side Wall is ma-' terially facilitated and at the same time securing the necessary strength and durability.
The invention consists in a metal plate for ceilings or side walls constructed substantially as shown in the drawings and hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view showing the exposed'or outer side of the plate constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a sectional elevation, on an enlarged scale, showing the two adjoining plates as they will appear when connected together.
In the accompanying drawings, Arepresents the sheet-metal plate, of square or other form and ornamental or plain, as found desirable. This plate at one of its edges has an outwardly-projecting flange; (1, which is bent down upon itself, as shown at b, and thence extends at right angles to form a lip or tongue 0. The opposite end of the plate A is provided with a grooved extension d, into which fits the lip or tongue 0 of the adjoining plate. This grooved extension is at right angles or holds the same relative position to the plate as the lip or tongue, said grooved extension d either being formed with the plate or separate and afterward secured thereto by riveting, as shown. The lip or tongue and the grooved extension do not extend the entire width of the plate, but are somewhat shorter,
,so as to leave the corners e of the plate perfectly fiat-and unobstructed by the ends of the lip or tongue and the grooved extension. This enables the plates at theiropposite edges to overlap the edges of the adjoining plates throughout their width, thereby forming a solid connection of the several plates with cheap in construction and capable of easy,
adjustment, and when in position and secured together a solid, strong, and effective metal ceiling or side wall is provided.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A metal plate for ceilings or side walls, having an outwardly-projecting flange bent down upon itself and thence extending at right angles to form a locking lip or tongue, and a grooved extension upon the opposite 8o edge of the plate with which the lip or tongue of the adjoining plate engages, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
7 2. A metal plate for ceilings or side walls, having an outWardly-projecting flange bent down upon itself and thence extending at right angles to form a locking lip or tongue, and a grooved extension upon the opposite edge of the plate, said lip or tongue and the grooved extension being of less length than the width of the plate to leave the corners thereof unobstructed and admit of the corners overlapping each other when the plates are together, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony thatl claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses. V
' GEORGE H. ENNIS.
