ROBERT ELLSVVORTH' DANIELS, OF YOIINGSTOIVN, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO I-IOSEA IIUFFSTOT, OF SAMEPLAOE.
METALLIC LATHING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 608,759, dated August 9, 1898.
Application filed August 18, 1897- To all whom it mag/concern.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT ELLSVVORTH DANIELS, a citizen of the United States, re-' accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to metallic lathing, and may be more particularly term ed a continuous metal strip to be placed upon the reentrant or projecting corners of rooms and upon the corners of arches and all similar architectural constructions before the plastering is put on; and the object of the said strip is not only to strengthen the edge of the corner, but to aid in holding the plaster into position.
I will first describe my invention in detail with the aid of the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a portion of my metal strip, a part of which discloses the punched blank of metal and the other part showing the wings of the said blank bent into the finished product. Fig. 2 is a similar view of a modified form of the invention. Fig. 3 is a section of Fig. 1 on the line 3 3. Fig. 4 is a section of Fig. 1 upon the line 4 4. Fig. 5 is a section of Fig. 2 on line 5 5. Fig. 6 is asection of Fig. 2 on line 6 6, and Fig. 7 is a perspective view of one of the strips.
In the several views the same numeral always indicates the same part.
1 represents a strip of metal in which is punched the continuous series of semicircular holes 2 in adjacent pairs, a projecting and rounding bead 3 being pressed or embossed in the middle of the strip and between the said semicircular .holes and throughout the whole length of the strip. Small holes 4 are punched upon one side of the strip and between the openings 2, being for the nails by which the strip is to be fastened to the lathed projecting corner before the plaster is applied.
The foregoing description is of the metal blank of which my strip is made, and it is made into the finished product as follows:
S erial N o. 648,659. (No model.)
Upon one edge of the strip shearing cuts are made to enter the semicircular holes, as at 5 5, &c., and the wings 6 are alternately bent in opposite directions on the line 7, such bending being carried to the point that the planes of the respective adjacent wings are at right angles. In Fig. 2 I have shown the holes 2 but upon one side of the strip in the blank, the wings being separated upon the other side by the slots 8. Otherwise the structures are the same, the latter presenting somewhat greater resistant strength over the first form shown.
I use my corner-lathing as follows: The wings being placed astride the corner-block or the lathed corner of the wall, they are nailed into place by light sprigs. the strip is now in position to receive the plastering as it is applied. The said plastering, pushing into the holes 2, becomes keyed into position and will come to the sharp corner upon the said edge of the strip. As has already been said, arches of any form may be turned and the material adapted to various analogous purposes and constructions.
Having thus fully described my invention and shown the method of using the same, what I desire to protect by my Letters Patent and claim is 1. In a metallic lath, the combination of a corner-piece, the holes therein, the alternate wings thereof, and the stiffening-bead, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. In a metallic corner-strip, the alternating wings adapted to straddle the corner, an d the continuous embossed bead adapted to stiffen the strip, substantially as described.
3. A blank for corner-strips,comprisin g the metal strip the embossed bead extending the full length thereof, and the series of holes upon both sides of the said bead, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT ELLSWORTII DA NIELZS.
