'H. S. NORTHROP.
3 METAL CEILING.
v Patented, Aug. 12, 1890 INVENTOH: mic/5,39% B) ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY S. NORTHROP, OF NEWV YORK, N. Y.
METAL CEILING..
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 434,353, dated August 12, 1890.
Application filed November 5 l889. Serial No. 329,312; (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY S. NORTHROP, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Metal Ceiling, of which the following isa full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to that class of metal ceilings in which the metal is applied to the ceiling in thin stamped sheets or plates and attached to the same by brads, nails, or screws. It is usual in making the ceilingplates to provide them with a raised bead for the purpose of strengthening the sheets near the edge, and with a projecting flange of, say, one-fourth of an inch around the outside of the bead. They are attached to the ceiling by nails driven through the flanges, the flange on one plate overlapping that on the other. This brings the raised beads on the various plates close together and makes the joints and nail-heads between the plates very noticeable. The object of my invention is to remedy this defect and give to the ceiling the appearance of a single embossed sheet.
To this end my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a broken plan view of two plates of my invention attached to a ceiling; Fig. 2, a cross-section of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a plan view showing another style of ornamentation, and Fig. 4 a cross-section of the same on the line at 4 of Fig. 3.
The views show different styles of ornamentation and the figures in relief on the flanges of the plates should harmonize with the design on the main plates, so as to aid in giving to the entire ceiling the appearance of a single embossed plate.
The plates A are of the usual construction with the exception of the flanges, as described below. The plates have the usual bead B near the edge and extending entirely around them, said beads serving to strengthen the sheets and to assist in making an even joint. The plates have flat flanges a, which project beyond the beads, and on the flanges is ornamentation in relief, such as the separated bosses at and a Any style of ornamentation may be used, the style conforming preferably to the style of ornamentation on the main plate. the flanges of but two sides of the plate, as the other two flanges will be overlapped by the flanges on the adjoining plates. The plates are attached by nails driven through the plates and through the flanges. The plates are applied in such a manner that the ornamented flanges will overlap the plain flanges, and the nails are driven between the bosses a a so that they will not be prominently displayed, and as the ornamentation on the flanges conforms to the ornamentation on the main plates the joints between the plates will not be noticeable. I
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a metal ceiling, the combination of-two adjoining plates having parallel beads near their outer edges and flanges projecting beyond the beads, one of said flanges overlapping the other and having ornamentation in relief thereon, said ornamentations being separated from each other to afford spaces for the attaching-nails, substantially as described.
HENRY S. NORTl-IROP.
