FASTENING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 1'7, 1909.
Patented May 16, 1911.
Serial No. 478,385. I
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, ADOLPH HENRY BoBB, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Fastening, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to metallic doors and other sheet metal structures, and its object is to provide a new and improved fastening for securing moldings, trims and the like in position without the use of rivets, screws and like fastening devices, the fastening being arranged to allow expansion and contraction of the united parts without danger of becoming detached or loose.
In case the invention is applied to a door,
as shown in the drawings, the panel member is provided with integral pockets into which extend flanges formed on the molding, the flanges being clamped in the pockets by the walls thereof.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a sectional front elevation of a metallic door, provided with the improvement; Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a face view of the blank for one of the panel members; Fig. 4 is a sectional perspective View of'a portion of one of the panel members; and Fig. 5 is a sectional plan view of the door on the line 55 of Fig. 1.
The frame of the door shown in the drawings consists of the two side or longitudinal hollow stiles A, A, and the upper and lower hollow stiles B, B and a panel C fills the open space of the frame. The stile A is provided with a suitable lock D, and the stile 'A is provided with hinges E for hanging manner described are adapted to receive the terminal flanges I of moldings I, formed integrally on the face members J of the stiles A, A, B, B, and the said flanges I are securely clamped in place in the pockets H by subjecting the pocket layers to lateral pressure, to close the inner and middle members firmly onto the flanges I. The moldings I of the upper and lower stiles B, B are mitered at their ends, so as to provide a miter joint between adjacent moldings, the joint being preferably closed by soldering, brazing, electric welding or the like. By the arrangement described, the panel members are securely joined with the integral moldings I of the stiles A, A, B, B without the use of rivets, screws or like fastening devices, and hence the faces of the door are not marred by such fastening devices. The corners ofthe panel members F, F are notched at f and the edges of the members are provided with transverse flanges L, having auxiliary angular flanges L, the flanges L extending in opposite directions between the stile'members J, J, as plainly indicated in the drawings.
It is understood that the pockets H of each panel member join at the ends, and when forming the pockets from a sheet metal blank, it is necessary to provide the blank 7 with cut-out portions H substantially pentagonal in shape. as indicated in Fig. 3, so as to form'a four-sided continuous pocket on the panel member F, for the reception of the flanges I of the four moldings I of the stile members J of the stiles A, A, B, B. It is understood that in practice the portion bent to form the pockets H is continued throughout the length and width of the panel blank, but only the inner portions are used as pockets for the reception of the flanges I, as above described.
The door is provided with corner irons N connecting blocks 0, O at the stiles A, A. Closing strips P atthe open ends of the side stiles A, A are also used, but as this construction of the door is more fully set forth in the Letters Patent, No. 896,513, granted to me August 18, 1908, it is not deemed necessary to describe the same in detail.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A metallic door, comprising hollow stiles having inwardly extending moldings, and a panel having on the outer faces of its sides and spaced from the edges thereof outwardly openings pockets, the portions of the panel beyond the pockets being of the same thickness as the central portion thereof and extending into the stiles to within a short distance of their outer edges and the moldings of said stiles extending into and clamped in the pockets of the panel.
2. A metallic door, comprising hollow stiles having inwardly extending moldings, and a panel having each of its sides bent to form on the outer face thereof outwardly opening pockets spaced from the edges of the panel, the portions of the panel beyond the pockets being of the same thickness as the central portion thereof and provided with angular flanges, the said portions of the panel extending into the stiles to within a short distance of their outer edges and the moldings of the said stiles extending into the pockets of the panels.
8. A metallic door, comprising hollow upper and lower side stiles, each stile being provided with members having integral moldings terminating in flanges, and a panel formed of members having terminal flanges extending in opposite directions and between the inner faces of the said stile members, each panel member being provided with integral pockets joined at the ends, the said molding flanges extending into the pockets and being clamped therein bv the walls of the pockets.
4. A door panel blank, comprising a rectangular sheet metal plate having its corners notched and provided with four out out portions, substantially pentagonal in shape and arranged adjacent to the corners of the plate.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
