Description

J. I'. 'LEMPERAQ METALLIC DOOR. y
APPMGATIGN NLED JUNE 12, 1911. f
1,021,053. '1 Patenteamanzmglg.
' l"consists in the-novel vconstruction and arnniTED JoHN I. LEMPERA,
oF'IoIiIoAG-o, ILLINOIS.
' METALLIC noon,
To all whom-it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN I. LEMPERA,
'a citimn of the United States, anda resident of the. city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State .of'lllinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Doors-of which the following is a` speciand clai med.
vfication.
My invent-ion. relates to improvements inj Inet-allie dco-rs,the object of .the invention being to provide a door of thls type wluch shall bepractically devoid of exposed seams and composed of a minimum number of parts.
A fur-tl'ierobject of'my'invention'is to provide "a Ametallic door in which is incorporated adequate lireresisting materials, thereby rendering the saine fire-proof.
. Other objects will appear-hereinafter.
lVith' these objec'ts in vie'w my invention rangements of l'parts hereinafter d escrihgd My. invention will behest -nnderstoodby reference tothe accompanying drawings forming a"p'artof this specification, and in which,
` Figure' 1' is la side elevation of a metallic 'spective view showin vertical longitudinal section-thereof taken on yllnr` fr-- of'Fig. 1, F1g. 3is a detail perg a plateemployed in my invention; a transverse horlzontal sect-ion taken -on line dr/.-g/.of Fig. l.
'and Fig. 5 is a similar sect-ion taken on line z-z of Fig.
The.. preferred forrn'o construction of my inventio'nns illustrated in the accompanying drawingslcomprises a metallic door the lparts of which are allcomposed o f sheet metal, 'thereof vcheap, stro'ng, andino-resisting to thereby; rendering the construction a certain'.degree. Hollow Stiles l constitute theyertical edges of the'd'oor, and' the saine are connected at thelr-ends by a pair of hollowrails and adjacentfthcir centers by a hollow rail 3. Each stile 1 4has a cross sec- .tionas clearly illustrated infFigs. 4 and 5, -the upper-and lower end of each st ilebeing inclosed'byinetalplates fl 'which are inserted .in the ends v01': said Stiles and-.suitably se- .cured in positionfas by soldering. -The location of the platesAis indicated zontaldotted lines inx-F Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led .Tu'ne 12, 1911-.'

serial No. 632,712.
is clearly to sin'iplyclosethe openings at the ends of eachstile. Formed at the inner edge of each stile 1 is a. pair of inwardly extending U-shaped channels 5, the, inner edges of the vrails-2 and both edges 'o f the 60 rails 3 being also.' provided with channels-` 5. Formed at each end of the rails 2 Aand 3 are inwardly extending flanges 6 which are. securely engaged .wit-h the channels 5 as clearly illustrated in Fig. 5;
that the langesI of the rails 2 and-3 must be engaged with the channels 5 l duri-ng the,l
formingr of the edges of the same'. zAg'ter the rails are once formed and the tlanges engaged wit-h the channels 5 then the walls 70 at the edges of Said rails will lock said flanges with said channels, no 4farther locking `mean's being necessary. Bv reference to Fig. 5 it will be seen that.
the inner edges ofthe channels 5 are spaced 75.
apart. The object of this spacing is to form a slot for the insertion of a. hollow metallic panel? the thickness of-which corresponds substantially wit-h thewidth of saidY slot.
Eaclrpanel 7 is.nsei-ted in the slots ofthe 8'0 stilesand railsl provided thereforand locked in position hyurnejans of sheet metal mold'- ings 8 as'lwill heprsntly described. Each panel T is piotzided with a. filling of asbes.- i tosf) or 'other fire-resisting material, and 85 eac-h stile and rail is provided wit-h longig' tndinal strips l0 'of ashestosorother firearranged d lagon ally rangement of th( strips 10 is to,di\-'ide.the Stiles and rails into two separate; air compartments, it being well known that still. air is an effecting insulator in""'i't'self. A
molding 8 comprises an edge 11 which ahnts 95.-
one side of a panel 7. The lmolding extends from the'edge 1.1 in the direction of a corner of one of the inner edges of a stile or? rail, thence inwardly to the bot-tom of a channel 5, Athence after being bent upon 1'00 itself the same extends ont' of said channel and around the same whereupon it. termi nates in'one'of the walls' of said panel which is formed integralt-herewith. This construction-of one set off the'inoldings 8, 105
is clearby reference-to Figs. 2 and Another set 'of moldings 8 similrtothat just described is shown in Figs. :Zand 4. These -moldings form'a'seat for 'the anels T and .prior ,to terminatingin. a wal of-a. panel 110 It is apparent 65 45 'I of's'aidstiles, thence inwardly in a channel,
7 as do -the moldings above described they inclose'the edges Aof said panels as will be seen.
' When the rails; Stiles Iand panels are turned together and securely locked, a very stiff and ,dnrabledoor is obtained. And
when the, door is finished and enameled the seams in the stiles and rails are invisible,
- and the enamel is not likely to crack atthese points.
' It is` apparent from-the foregoing description that window sashes and other like ob- -jects can be constructed according to this inventiom'sincethe drawings forming a part' Lof-this* spedification are only intended to il'llustra'teifone' application thereof.
.fg A"`r'netalli`dfoor 'of the construct-ion set "'forth-"is srn'plefof construction, cheap to manufacture aiid neat and compact `in appa'lllef', .1 f. While lfha've illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying lai' shaped channels' at the inner edges of said4 and' odicationsjas come within 'nyunventgion intoV effect, this is capable of off the 4happended claims.
"Having described my invent-ionewhat VI claim as new andJ desireto secure by `Letters ,i ;'1. `A nietaglicudoor comprising' a pain of 8.5
