Application filed February 14, 1914. Serial No. 818,682.
To all whom it may Concern Be it known that we, JOHN E. FREY and THOMAS F. BERRILL, citizens of the United States, and residents of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Metal Door, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Our invention has for its object to provide a metal door with improved means for holding the members of the door together. One of the members of our door has inwardly disposed flanges and another member of the door has looped portions, tie members being provided for engaging the looped portions and a key being provided for holding the tie members in position relatively to the flanges.
Additional objects of the invention will appear in the following specification in which the preferred form of our invention is disclosed.
In the drawings similar reference characters refer to similar parts in all the views in which-Figure 1 is a perspective view showing our improved door; Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view showing a modification of the invention; Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view on the line H of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional view on the line 5'5 of Fig. 1; Fig. 6 is an enlarged sectional view on the line 66 of Fig. 1, with the parts spaced from each other to show their construction in greater detail; and Fig. 7 shows a modified form with the tie members integral with the key.
By referring to the drawings, it will be seen that the door has rails 10, 11 and 12, stiles 13 and 14, and panels or lights 15 and 16. The rails 10, 11 and 12 are hollow, the rail 12 having sides 17 bent back at 18 and then inwardly, forming flanges 19, the flanges extending at 20 a-distance parallel with the sides of the rail and then outwardly at 21, the panel or light supports 22 having looped portions 23 which embrace the sides 24 of the tie members 25, the other sides 26 of these tie members 25 being bent within the outwardly disposed portions 21 of the flanges 19. As a means of holding these sides 26 of the tie members 25. in
place, we provide a key 27 which has flanges 28 embracing the outwardly disposed portions 21 of the flanges 19 and holding the sides 26 of the tie members rearwardly. The light or panel support is held by this means to the rail 12, this light or panel sup-- port 22 having a channel 2.) in which an edge of a panel 30 is disposed. In a similar manner the light or panel supports 22 and 22 are secured to the rail 11 and the light or panel support 22 is also secured to the rail 10 in the said manner. As shown in the drawings the panel 30 is held in position by the supports 22 and 22, and a light 31 is held in position by the supports 22 and 22", but it willbe understood that lights and panels may be substituted for each other as may be desired. The sides of the panels 30 and the lights 31 are secured by the light and panel supports 32 shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, these supports having channels 33 for receiving the sides of the panels 31 or of the lights 31, as the case may be. The supports 32 which correspond with the supports 22 are provided with similar looped portions 23 which embrace the sides 24 of the tie members 25, these tie members corresponding with the tie members shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the flanges 19 on the stiles corresponding with the flanges 19 on the rails and the key 27 shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings. corresponding in all respects with the key 27 shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings for securing the supports 22 to the rails 12. The ends of the rails 10, 11 and 12 have looped portions 23 which correspond with the looped portions 23 on the light or panel supports and 32. This construction is provided so that the tie members 25, which embrace the looped portions 23 of, the supports 32, will also embrace the looped port-ions 23 at the ends of the rails 10, 11, and 12, similar ties being used for locking the sides of the stiles to the supports 32 and the rails 10, 11 and 12 that are used for uniting the rails 10, 11 and 12 with the supports 22. In order to assist the insertion of the lights or panels, certain of the supports 22 and 32 may be constructed as shown at 35 in Fig. 6 of the drawings, this light. or panel supporthaving the actual looped portions 32 with a side wall 36 at one side of the channel for receiving the light or panel and with a removable member 37 having the other side wall 38. When this member 37 is moved, the light or panel may be inserted after which the member 37 may be positioned with its edge 39 disposed in the recess 40 in the base 41.
In Fig. 3 of the drawings, we show a means for closing an end of one of the rails, this rail-l2 having the usual flanges 19, the usual tie members 25 being employed and an end-piece 43 being disclosed for inelosing the top or bottom of the door and being provided with the flanges ll which are disposed between the tie members 25 and the inner sides of the rail. The usual key 27 is employed for embracing the outwardly extending portions 21 of the flanges 19 and a support +5 is provided for the flanges 19 and the key 27.
It will be understood that the tie members 25 and the keys 27 may be slid longitudinally to unite the rails and stiles with each other and with the li ht and panel supports. These tie members 25 and the keys 27 are also slid longitudinally to unite the rails and the panel supports. It will also be seen that the parts of the door may be welded together from the inside.
As shown in Figs. 6 and 7 of the drawings, the tie members 25 may be constructed integral with the key 27.
Having thus described our invention We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a door, a plurality of members, one of the members having sides provided with inwardly disposed flanges, the flanges extending substantially parallel With the sides and then away from each other, another member of the door having looped portions, tie members disposed around the looped portions of the second member and having flanges around which the first flanges extend, and a key having flanges extending around the flanges in the first member for the purpose specified.
2. In a door, a member having looped portions, another member having looped portions, tie members having edges extending around the looped portions on the first member and edges around which the looped portions of the second member extend, and a key having flanges extending around the looped portions of the second member for holding. the tie members within the last'mentioned looped portions.
3. In a door, a member having an end with flanges adjacent thereto, the flanges extending inwardly, then in the direction of the end and then away from each other, another member having looped portions disposed within the first member and adjacent the sides of the first member, tie members around which the looped portions extend and around which the flanges on the first member extend, and a key having flanges extending around the flanges on the first member for holding the tie members back relatively to the end of the first member.
4. In aconstruction of the class described, a member having a Mange extending substantially at right angles to the member, a hook on the end of the flange, a second memher having a looped portion disposed between the tirst member and the hook, and without the hook, a tie member interlocking with the hook and the looped portion, and means for holding the tie member in operative position.
In a door, a hollow member having sides with inwardly disposed flanges, the flanges having hooked ends extending away from each other, a key having flanges at its ends interlocking with the hooks, a member with flanges disposed Within the hollow member adjacent the sides, and means for holding the last mentioned flanges spaced from the key.
(5. In av construction of the class described, a member having a flange extending substantially at right angles to the member, a hook on the end of the flange, a second member having a looped portion disposed between the first member and the hook and without the hook, a tie member having an end bent within the looped portion, and another end bent within the hook, and means for holding the tie member in position.
7. In a door, two hollow rails spaced apart, each rail having adjacent its inner side inwardly extending flanges, the flanges at their ends being bent in the direction of the said sides of the rails and then outwardly, two panel supports disposed between the rails, each of the panel supports having looped portions disposed Within one of the aforesaid rails, ,tie members embraced by the looped portions and disposed within the outwardly disposed portions of the first flanges, keys having bent flanges embracing the outwardly disposed portions of the first flanges for holding the tie members against the rear of the first flanges, additional panel supports at the sides and between the first panel supports, the additional panel supports having outwardly extending looped portions, outwardly extending looped portions at the ends of the rails, two hollow stiles, one at each end of the rails, the stiles having flanges which extending inwardly a distance then in the direction of the rails and then outwardly, tie members embraced by the looped portions of the additional panel supports and by the looped portions of the rails, the last mentioned tie members extending within the outwardly extending portions of the flanges on the stiles and keys with flanges at their sides embracing the out wardly disposed portions of the flanges on the stiles for holding the last mentioned tie members back relatively to the flanges on the stiles.
8. A hollow door member having flanges adjacent an end of the member, flanges extending inwardly a distance then in the direction of the end and then away from each other a second door member having looped portions extending within the first door member at its end, tie members, each having one set of sides embraced by looped portions of the second door member, the other sides of the tie members being bent within the outwardly disposed portions of the first flanges and keys having sides with flanges bent around the outwardly disposed portions of the first flanges.
