These two sheets A and B are connected to each other and fixed together to form the door or shutter by straps of iron D, all of which are fixed across from one side A, to the other side 13, in the manner shown; thus making the connection from rivet E diagonally across to screw F the distance of all connections between the two sides A and B. Description

{No Model.)
Y J. GASGOIGNE. PIREPBODP DOOR 0B SHUTTER.
fizz/6722, 071
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH GASOOIGNE, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
FIREPROOF DOOR OR SHUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 505,51 8, dated September 26, 1893.
Application filed June 29, 1892.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J OSEPH GASCOIGNE, a subject of the Queen of England, (having made declaration of my intention to become a citizen of the United States,) residing at Worcester, in the county of Worcester, State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and original Fireproof Door or Shutter, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section, and Fig. 2 is a front elevation on a reduced scale.
The object of my invention is to provide an efiective fireproof door or shutter thatnis incombustible. I attain this by the following means, viz: by using two sheets of iron A and B, Fig. 1, with the edges turned inward at C. These two sheets A and B are connected to each other and fixed together to form the door or shutter by straps of iron D, all of which are fixed across from one side A, to the other side 13, in the manner shown; thus making the connection from rivet E diagonally across to screw F the distance of all connections between the two sides A and B. These two sides are fixed so that the turned in edges O are a little distance from each other as shown. Thus it will be seen that all direct connection between the two sides A and B is through the Serial No. 438,480- (llo model.)
straps D and the'length of said straps from rivet E to screw F, which are the only connection between the two sides A and B, makes the two sides A and 1B of the door or shutter practically as far apart as the distance from rivet E across diagonally to screw F as regards the transmission of heat.
The dotted lines in Fig. 2 show the position in which the connecting straps D, are placed around and across thedoor or shutter. This is an effective fireproof door or shutter, as it is entirely made of iron making it iuoombustible; and the features of construction as described above make it practically equal to several times its actual thickness as regards the transmission of heat.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Afire proof door or shutter comprising two sheets of iron forming the two sides, their edges being turned inward and a short space being left between said turned-in edges, and connections between the two sides, consisting entirely of diagonally arranged straps secured alternately to the two sides of the door or shutter, substantially as described.
