TQ ALL WHOM IT MAY i eononnn I I p I Be it known that I, Aueusrnsflnotrnn Lnoronn Por'orsux, commonly'kuown as Aueusrus Porotrsxr, a subject of the Czar'of Russia, now residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain newend useful Improvements in Buckles; and that thelfollowing is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.

The objectsof my invention .are prineipally'td enable the pantnloons or other garment to be readily disconnected from imd cehn'ected with the'shohldepstrap' of suspenders, without the necessity of unbuttoning and rebuttoning the short straps or tags from or to the-said garment; also to afl'ord a ready mezius of varying the eiicctive length of the shoulder-strap.

the loop (for holding the"short straps,) whicheo'nstitute the two members of a buckle, witha spring-stud upon the one of said members, and a slotted stop plnte for the other of said members, the whole operating in such manner that when the slot of the plate isnpplied-to the-spring-stud, the yielding of the latter permits the step to pnssbenea'th the stud, n.'nd stopjthe disengagement of theiplate, until sufficient forcebeeirerted to bend the ously from the'shoulder-strap, bydise'rigaging the plate from thestud. v

The strap-holder A is constructed with a, stud, .b, that is mounted upon the end of c spring-tongue, c, that intervenes between a paiir of ch'eok pieees, e c; This spring rind stud constitute the spring-stud of the strapholder, and the spring 0 is'so constructed, that it tends to draw the head of the stud towards the face of the check-pieces e e. The loop D is'eonstructed with a slotted plate, f, having at the end of the slot h,nenrest the loop, on opening, of suificient sizeto admit the head of the stud 6, while the residue of the slot is smaller,-

When the garment is to be rc engitged with the shoulder-strap, the openingg isnlipped over the head of the stud b, and the loop is drawn lengthwise, so as to cause 'the's'tcps to puss'beneuth the head of the stud 6, thereby flexing the spring, and as thehead rerchcs the end of thejsl'onthe force of .tbe' spring-cdraws th'e'hend of the stud inwards behind the stops, so that they prevent the longitudinal movement of the platof, unless suficient force be exerted to bend the stud-spring 'c.

In order that the second part of the invention may be embodied, the stock A of the buckle is constructed with a toothed slot, m, and is combined with a tu rning-hnr clamp, .J, between which'and the teeth 2' -1 of the slot, the shoulder-strap is inserted. Ihebar-clamp dies a tongue, t,-whieh extends at the s'idecf the position of the strap, and furnishes a ready means-er turningthe bunclamp 'away'fromtheteeth, (asseeu' in red lines in-fig; 3,) fonthe purpose of releasing the strup'ahd permitting it to-be moved.

I prefer to "use both parts of my invention in the some implement, but the first may be used without the second, a toothed bar, or tongues of the ordinary construction, or a. slide-loop being then used to secure the shoulder-strep.

I also prefer to spply-the spring-stud. to the strap-holder, and the stopped slot-plate to thetloop, as represented in the drawings but it is obvious that this arrangement may be reversed, the spring-stud being applied to-theloop, and the stepped slot-plate to the'stock or strap-holder, which I regard as the equivalent of the construction represented in the drawings.

The improvements Ihave described, were invented with special reference to buckles for-suspenders, but they may be applied with advantage to buckles for otherpurposes where their employment would be advantageous.

What Ii-claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The ccmbinatioh, in a buckle, of the two members thereof with u spring-stud upon one member, and with the slotted stop-plate upon the othermembcr tbereof, 'substantiully as before set forth;

Also the combination of the stock of the buckle, constructed with a toothed slot, with a turning bar-clamp, substantially as before set forth. I
