Patented Aug. 29, 1905.
Application filed January 4, 1905. Serial No. 239,594.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PRICE MANUS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hartford City, in the county of Blackford and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Closures, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a bottle-closure; and it consists in certain novel features of construction hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of the invention is to provide a bottle-cap which can readily be operated with one hand, leaving the other hand free to hold a glass or other object.
A further object is to have the cap detachable, so that it can be taken off the bottle and cleaned or polished without disturbing the contents of the bottle.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is an elevation of a bottle provided with the invention, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the bottle without the cap.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 5 denotes a bottle havinga neck 6, which is formed on the outside with a collar 7 on which the cap 8 is supported. An inclined channel or groove 9 is made in the neck, on the outside thereof, the lowest point of which channel communicates with an opening 10 through the neck.
The channel inclines both ways and has for its object to return to the bottle any of its contents which may run down on the outside of the neck. The cap 8 fits loosely on the neck, being supported on the collar 7, as already stated, and has on the bottom a bead 11. On one side the cap is provided with a downwardly-extending trip or finger-piece 12, whereby it is operated.
When lifting up the bottle to pour out its contents,the forefinger is placed on the trip 12, and upon pressing on the trip the cap will be tilted back, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1, until it clears the mouth of the bottle, the collar 7 forming the fulcrum on which the cap swings. The cap is readily operated with one When the trip is released, the cap drops back by gravity and closes the bottle. To assist the return of the cap, a weight 13 may be placed in thebead 11 opposite the pouring side of the bottle. It is to be noted that on this side the neck is made shorter, so that the cap can clear it when it is tilted. A groove 14 is made in the collar 7 opposite the trip 12, into which the trip enters when it is pressed down to tilt the cap. The finger which engages the trip extends over the outside of the groove, which enables the cap to be held steady and also prevents lateral play thereof. As the cap is not made fast to the bottle, it can be readily lifted off for cleaning or polishing.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a bottle having a collar extending around the neck on the outside thereof, of a removable cap fitting over the mouth of the bottle and supported on the collar, and a finger-piece on the cap for tilting it to open the bottle.
2. The combination with a bottle having a collar extending around the neck on the outside thereof, of a removable cap fitting over the mouth of the bottle and supported on the collar, said cap being weighted on one side, and havinga finger-piece on the opposite side for tilting the cap to open the bottle.
3. The combination with a bottle having a collar extending around the neck on the outside thereof and provided with a groove, of a removable cap fitting over the mouth of the bottle and supported on the collar, said cap being weighted on one side, and having a fingerpiece on the opposite side arranged to enter the groove in the collar when said finger-piece is pressed down to tilt the cap to open the bottle.
