Description
(No Model.) I W. M. BREWER.
No. 591,735. Patented Oct. 12,1897,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM M. BREWER, OF NElV BRIGHTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
JUG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 591,735, dated October 12, 1897.
Application filed May 18, 1897. Serial No. 637,090. (No model.)
T 0 (tZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. BREWER, a citizen of theUnited States, and a resident of New Brighton, in the county of Beaver and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jugs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in jugs, bottles, and other similar receptacles, and its object is to provide a novel construction of the same whereby the contents may be poured out in a steady even stream without gurgling.
The invention consists, essentially, in a jug or bottle formed with a web or partition in the neck, having a contracted opening therein, and a handle formed with an air-passage communicating with the interior of the jug or bottle and with said neck above the web or partition, as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section of a jug constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view, the cork or stopper bein g removed.
In the said drawings the reference-numeral 1 designates a jug provided with the usual neck 2. Formed in the neck is aweb or partition 3, having a contracted opening 4 therein. This opening is preferably formed in the said web at a point opposite the handle, although this is not necessary, as it may be made in the center or at any other point desired. I also prefer to make the said opening about onehalf the size or diameter of the neck, although this is not essential, as it is only necessary that it should be somewhat smaller than the neck.
The numeral 5 designates the handle, formed with an air-passage 6, the lower end of which communicates with the interior of the jug, while the other or upper end of the same communicates with the neck above the web or partition.
In use, when the jug is tilted to pour out the contents, owing to the opening in the web or partition being of less diameter than that of the neck, the liquid cannot fill the latter, so that air can enter the neck, which, passing through the handle, will overcome the tendency of a vacuum being formed in the jug and causing the contents to flow in a steady even stream without gurgling.
The mouth of the neck is closed by an ordinary cork or stopper.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is- As an improved article, a jug, bottle or other similar receptacle having a web or partition formed in the neck with a contracted opening therein eccentric to the upper enlarged opening or mouth forming a ledge for the lower end of the cork or stopper, and the handle formed with an air-passage communicating with the body of the receptacle and with the enlarged opening in the neck, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my ownI have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM M. BREWER.
