fnveluors Uharlesfi Glazier TED STATES PATENT OFFTQ CHARLES H. GLAZIER, OF HUBBARCDSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
' JUG.
Application filed February 26, 1909.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. GLAZIER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hubbardston, in the county of \Vorcester and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Jugs, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to receptacles such as water pitchers or jugs and pertains more especially to a container for liquids having provision proximate its outlet for preventing the escape of solids such as ice, which may be present in the contained liquid.
Among other objects the invention is designed to provide a construction adapting itself readily to the peculiar problems arising in the manufacture of glass blanks intended to be ornamented by cutting. In preparing the blanks for cutting glass, it is customary to employ a peculiar variety of glass and to fashion the same by blowing as distinguished from pressing. A jug or other receptacle embodying features of this invention has a construction which lends itself very desirably to the difficult operation of blowing the particular variety of glass used; and a method embodying the invention comprising greatly facilitated steps permitting the manufacture of a suitable construction of jug or the like with minimum difficulty, from glass intended for cutting.
The character of the invention may be best understood by reference to a specific article embodying features of the invention, and shown by way of illustration in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure l is a side elevation of a jug or pitcher embodying the invention; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary front elevation viewed from the left in Fig. 1, showing a desirable construction of spout and retaining means; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the article shown in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings the body a may be of any practicable form or shape; and may have a handle 7) of any desired design. The upper and open end of the jug has a mouth 0 proximate which are provided Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J uly 21, 1914.
Serial No. 480,204.
retaining lips (Z, (Z the same being preferably integral with the body of the jug and formed by bending parts of the body toward each other to obstruct in some degree the escape through the mouth 0, of the contents of the ug.
An article such as that just described may be readily fashioned by a method embodying features of the invention. For instance the jug shown in the drawings may be formed by blowing the body and manipu lating it to desired form and then shearing the then approximately cylindrical upper portion on a curve sufficient to leave one or more lips (Z, (Z upstanding in substantial continuation of the body shape of the article. Thereafter when in a suitably pliable con dition the lip or lips may be bent or formed over to obstruct more or less, as desired, the mouth of the jug or other container.
By thus manipulating the integral body of glass by merely bending its different parts, it is possible to avoid welding on separate pieces which would be impracticable. Furthermore the entire operation may be completed without other reheating than that ordinarily necessary in blowing and fashioning a unitary device.
As will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art, the above described article embodying the invention, present features of great advantage.
The invention is not, of course limited to the specific construction described for illustration. It is not indispensable that the features of the invention be used conjointly since they may be used to advantage sepaseparately.
Claim:
As an article of manufacture, a one-piece glass blank for cutting, comprising a blown, manipulated, body portion in the form of a jug and having upright, encircling side walls terminating at the top in a pouring mouth, and having two lateral lips integral with the said blown body portion and forming unbroken continuations of the upper edges of said encircling side walls, sheared and bent over inwardly toward each other so as substantially to touch and thereby substantially completely to obstruct, to the issuance of solids, the top of the jug diname to this specification, in the presence of rectly in the rear of the pouring mouth, two subscribing witnesses. whi e leaving said mouth wholl unobr structed in advance of said lips, to the flow CHARLES GLA'AIER' of liquid, the entire receptacle being blown Witnesses: from glass in a single integral piece. EDWARD WVIENER,
In testimony whereof, I have signed my HENRY WIENER, Jr.
