IMPROVEMENT 1N PASTENING THE 'Limite To soLES'or BOOTS AND SHOES..-
tlge rlgemle'tgfettet 'tu in ttm rttmrtmt mit matiugpurt -nt ttt tame.'
TO ALL-WHOM IT MAY CONOERN:
4or gauge of the'lever g.
Beit known that we, D. H. PRIEST and H.'S. WALCOTT, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk, and-,State of Massachusetts, have'invented a new and improved Device for Fastening the Linings to the Soles of Boots and Shoes; andwe hereby declare that the followingis a. correct descriptiony of the'invention, and we refer to the accompanying drawings, and letters of `reference marked thereon, as parts of this specication.' l
Figure 1 is a, side elevation of the device, and
` Figure 2 is a vertical'section of the same. K 1- l The letter A.-'reprcsents Vthestamdard or legof-the device; b, the last supported by the standard; c, its metallic facing or. rim; d, -e,aud ff, the heel and toe and side springsgupon whic-hthe' faci/ng or rim rests B, theY fork or brace supporting-the l'eveng; I1., the spring of the leverg; t', its fulcruui, and Iy'ithe adjustable plate Lining the inn-er soles of boots and shoes requires care, and no small labor and expense,"since the work is.v
done after the uppers are closed upon the soles, and this part of the finishing, done by the hand, is necessarily i done imperfectly, at best, the shoes, tc., often 'being so small as not easily to admit the hand to all parts of the solesto4smooth down or fasten the linings. This invention performs the work of fastening onthelining rapidly, and the lining is made to coverV the entire sole ;A and the device and the lmode of using it are thus described'.
and explained.
The standard' or leg, .A,vis` made of iron, wood, or,v any suitable material, with a base upon which itrests. I
Upon the standard is a. last, b, made of any suitable material, vand of different size, as occasion mayrequire. Upon and about the outer surface of the last, at the edge of the sole,` is a-yielding facing or rim, supported bysprings or otherwise. This rim-is independent of the last, exceptas combined 'and connected with the same by springs, as at cZ, e, andff, or their equivalents.` Ther springs keepthe faein'gor rim a quarter of an inch,` or thcreabouts, above the surface of the sole when lleft free, but when the facingsor rim ,is pressed down, its surface isv even with the surface of the sole. There is also a lever, g, attached at-its shorter arm by a spring, t, to the side of the fork or brace B, and it is supported upon the standard, turning upon its fulcrum, z'. 4It has also an adjustahleplate or gaugehi. By turning the screwconnectedv therewith, the plate is raised or lowered to suit the sizeof heel,v bringing the lever down upon the rim, as maybe'desired, more closely. The lever is operated by the hand, and, when brought down upon theirim, presses -it`down 'even with the surface'of the sole. 'The lever is not necessary inl light workpthe rim being easily pressed down with the hand, but it will beserviceable in heavier work. l* 4. V,
, To. operate the 'device,'the'liningcutffor the last, as ordinarily out, is laid upon the surfaceof the last, or its sole, .within the rim,- an i l Y d there pasted; or it may be pasted before layingl upon the last. The boot or shoe is then drawn -upon the last as in ordinary cases, and the bottoni is pressed .upon the last, and, the riin 'yielding as far as the surface of the sole, the lining is stuck to the surface of the'inn'er sole.l Remove the pressure and draw oli: the boot orshoe. In this way the liningl is fastened to the sole'much more rapidly, better, and more evenly `tha.n it can be done with the hand. The use of the rim is to preventl the lining from being ruffled or disturbed in drawing the boot orshoe onto the last. In using the.lever,'the same operation is performed.
The device costs hut littleQ-is-eifec'tive and perfect in its work, and saves inuch labor in lining, dto.
We are aware that T.. 'Lucey patented?, machine for'thisvpurpose, March 31, 1868, but our device, different.` in construction, is cheaper and more effective. Y l
What we claim as ourY invention, and desire to secure ,by Lett-ers Patent, is-
1. The automatic facing or rim c, operated by the springs d, e,'"'andff, or their equivalents, in combination with the last b, for the purpose 'of protecting the lining,A substantially in the manner specified. l
2. The combination and arrangement ofthe lever g, with its adjustable platej, and the parts z,`and B, for the purpose of operating upon thev rim c, substantially inthe manner speciied. i i' D. H, PRIEST, r `H. s. WALooTT.
