ADJUSTABLE SUPPORT FOR HQLDING BOOTS AND SHOES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 243,137, dated June 21, 1881.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD J EFFERYS, of London, in the county of Middlesex, England, have invented an Improved Adjustable Support for Holding Boots or Shoes while being Stitched or Finished; and 1 do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.

Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved support; Fig. 2, an end view of the same; Fig. 3, a view from above, and Fig. 4 a plan of the socket in which the support is fitted.

The object of my invention is to provide an appliance by which a boot or shoe fitted upon a last is supported while it is stitched and finished, so that its position can be readily altered and adjusted to bring every part of it suocessivelyinto the most convenient position to be operated upon by the workman.

My improvements consist mainly in providing the lower plate, upon which the upper plate is arranged to be turned, with a lug or bracket, on which it is pivoted and adapted to turn upon a center in a central jaw; and in also providing it with an arched guide and adjustingscrew, by means of which it may be adjusted and held to its desired position, as hereinafter more particularly set forth; and it further consists in combining with these features a central frame and pin, and a socket and holdingscrew; and in other details, which will now be more fully described.

In the figures, a is a socket, having a flange, b, which is fixed upon the top of a suitable standard or support, of wood or other material.

0 is avertical frame or bracket, at the lower end of which is a pin, d, fitting the socket a,

while at its upper end is a jaw, e, in which fits a correspondin g bracket, f, upon the lower side of the metal disk or plate g, the bolt h forming a center upon which the plate 9 can turn, and can be fixed in any position by the screw pressing upon the guide 2', which is fixed to the plate 9 and passes through an opening in c. A second plate, Z, is fitted upon the plate 9 by the center screw, m, so that it can be turned around and fixed in any position. The plate I has one or more holes, into which the standard n can be screwed, the upper end of which has a hole into which a strong pin, 0, is fitted,

which carries the heel end of the last p. At the opposite side of the plate 0 is a second standard, 0", the lower end of which is fixed by the bolt 8 working in the slot it, while its upper end is provided with a support, a, upon which the boot or shoe is held.

The operation of the device is as follows: The heel of the last 1) being fixed upon the standard a of the pin 0, the second standard 1' is forced toward the former until the boot or shoe is firmly held and supported, and it is then fixed by the bolt 8. Every part of the boot or shoe can then be stitched and finished with great ease, as it can be turned into any position and fixed, the upper plate, Z, turning upon the lower one, g, and the two together round the bolt it, either to the right or left, while the height of the apparatus can be adjusted by raising or lowering the pin (1 in the socket a.

The height of the standards a and 0" may be varied to suit different work; and instead of the pin 0 and the support a, the boot or shoe may be carried in supports at each end and held firm by a strap passing round a transverse bar below.

' With my improved appliance a workman can stand instead of sit, and finish every part of a boot or shoe with great economy of time and labor.

Having now described my invention, wh at I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. Theplate g, provided withalug or bracket, f, and an arched guide, 3, and pivoted to and adapted to turn on a center in the jaw e, and adjustable by means of the guide z' and screw k, in combination with the upper plate, 1, arranged to turn on the center screw, m, both plates being supported by a suitable standard.

2. The combination, with the plates g and l, bracket f, jaw 0, guide i, and screw it, of the frame 0, with its pin 01, and the socket a, with its holding-screw, substantially as shown and described.
