Patented Dec. 5. 1882.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIQE.
HENRY P. ROBERTS, OF JAMESTOWN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND AUGUSTUS KIBLING, OF SAME PLACE.
SHOE-MAKERS JACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 268,537, dated December 5, 1882,
Application filed April 26, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
. Be it known that I, HENRY P. Ronnarrs, of Jamestowmin the county of Chautauqua and StateofNew York, have invented new and useful Improvementsin Shoe-Makers J ack-s; and
I do hereby declare that the followiugis a mu,-
clear, and exact description thereof, reference beinghad totheaccompanyingdrawings, which form a part of this specification.
The nature of this invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the construction of thatclass of implements ordinarily denominated pegging-jacks, designed for use in the manufacture of boots and shoes.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction, arrangement, and combination of the various parts, whereby it may be adjusted to varying positions, as the work being done may require, all as more fully hereinafter set forth.
Figure 1 is-a perspective view of my improved jaek, and Fig. 2 is a cross-section.
In the accompanying drawings, A represeu ts a flanged swivel-plate, which is designed to be rigidly secured by means of bolts or otherwise to the flooror other-convenient place of easy access to the workmen; and this swivel-plate carries the swivel B, to the upwardly-projecting lug a of which is pivotally secured the arm 0, the outer end of which terminates in the flanged plate D, in the upper flange of which are formed the teeth b, thus producing an annular ratchet. Upon the top of this plate D, and within the flange thereof, is pivoted the plate E, which carries the vertical arm F and the curved arm G, as shown.
To the arm F is' secured the double springpawl H, either arm of which may be made to engage with the ratchet b, and upon the outer end of a curved arm, G, is adjustably secured the pad I, which is designed to support the fore part of the last. To the upper end of the arm F is pivotally secured the heel-arm J, which carries the pin (Z, and which is designed to engage with a hole in the heel of the last.
This arm J is also provided with an outwardlyprojecting stud, 6, between which and the top of the arm F is secured a coil or other suitable spring, K.
In the bottom of the swivel-plate A is placed a loose hearing, it, upon which the swivel B rests and has a bearing, and which enables the jack to be swung around in order that the work maybe more readily got at; and through the flange of the plate A is tapped a screw, L, the inner end of which, when so desired, is brought in contact with the edge of the swivelplate B to preventits turning. Asimiiar bolt,
M, is tapped through the curved arm (3, and is designed to engage with the stud: a of the swivel-plate, so as to hold or retain the jack in its vertical radial adjustable position.
By this construction and arrangement of parts I produce an implement for shoe-makers use for holding a boot or shoe in varying positions while it is being worked upon; and it 6 can readily be seen that the jack can be adjusted so that the workmen can inseam, stitch, peg, trim, and finish much faster and easier, and make more solid work .than where such work is held upon the knees with a strap, as in the ordinary manner. i
What I claim as myinveution is- 1. In a'shoeinakers jack, the combination of the swivel-plate A, swivel B, having perforated ear or, and the loose bearing-plate h for 7 such swivel, with the arm 0, set-screws L M, and last-holding devices, the whole adapted to allow oscillatory adjustment in twodirectious, as set forth.
2. The adjustable arm 0 and plate D, hav- 8c ing flange and ratchets b, the curved arm G, carrying adjustable toe-pad Land central pivot, K, combined with the arm F, carrying the heel-pin d, and with the double pawl H as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The heel-arm J, pivoted to the arm F, and havinga perforated ear, 0, and heel-pin d,combined with the spring K, arm F, arm G, toepad I, and the swivel-arm O, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
HENRY P. ROBERTS.
