To all whom it may concern:

J Be it known that I, ORSEMAS '1. X. ADAMS, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boot or Shoe Clamps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,

clear, and exact description of the invention,

x which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and usethe same,

reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The object of my invention is to furnish a simple, efiective, and cheap clamping device for holding the uppers of boots or shoes on the last while the soles are being sewed thereto according to the process of E. S. Pratt, patented April 6, 1880, No. 226,193. This I accomplish by means of inverted-L-shaped levers fulcrumed at their angles at either end of a fulcrum-bar and operated by a head moving vertically on ascrew, as will be hereinafter fully described, and as illustrated in the drawings, in which- Figure l is a-front elevation, and Fig.2 is a. side elevation, of my invention.

S. Pratt.

The invention as above described is adapted to straddle the last and clasp and hold the leather of the upper to the same in the manner shown and described, and is capable of easy adjustment to any width last by turning the screw to the right or left, according as it is desired to raise the head, thus decreasing the distance between the grasping-surfaces of the levers orlowering thehead, and thusseparate said grasping-surfaces.

It will be perceived that the above clamping device can be easily and speedily adjusted to the last, and that it is simpler and less complicated, therefore more efficient and less likely to need repairs, than those now in use.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A clamping device having inverted-L- shaped clamping levers pivoted at their angles and adapted to grasp or release a last according to the vertical movement of a head provided with projecting seats upon which the ends of the upper arms of saidlevers rest, snbstantially as hereinbel'ore described.

2. In a boot or shoe clamp, the'connbination, with the inverted-L-shaped clamping-levers AA and the fulcrum-bar B, of the head I) and screw C, as and for the purpose specified.

3. In a boot or shoe clamp, a head moving vertically on a screw, having one or two downwardly-projecting gniderods which move in suitable perforations inthe fulcrum -bar, in combination with the clamping-levers, as hereinbefore specified- In testimony thatIclaim the foregoing as my own I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
