Description
J. A. BILL. PEGGING JACK.
(No Model.)
Patented June 25 aftoznmao UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSHUA ADAM DILL, OF FREDERICK, MARYLAND.
PEGGING-JACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 405,768, dated June 25, 1889.
Application filed January 15, 1889. Serial No. 296,382. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSHUA ADAM DILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Frederick, in the county of Frederick and State of Maryland, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pegging-Jacks, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a shoe-clamp for use in soling shoes; and it consists in a certain novel construction and combination of devices, fully described hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawings, and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
111 the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a device embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of a portion of the last to show the manner of attaching the upper end of the heel-support thereto. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the upper end of the pitman and the latch. Fig. 4: is a detail perspective view of the pin which engages the rigid strap. Fig. 5 is a sectional view of the lower end of toe-standard.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A designates the base of the machine, to which is attached the vertical heel-support B, having a tenon C on its upper end, and D designates a last of the ordinary or any preferred shape or kind, which is provided at its heel with a socket E, to fit over the tenon on the heel-support, whereby the last may be turned around the support to enable the shoe to be placed thereon.
F designates the swinging toe-support, which is pivoted at its lower end to the base, and is provided at its upper end with a cushion G, to bear against the under side of the last, and thereby support the same. The toesupport is preferably provided at its lower end with an integral tongue f, which fits in a socket a in the base, and the shoulders f f of the said support bear on wear-plates a a on opposite sides of the said socket. A foottreadle H is pivoted nearthe lower end of the heel-,standard and operates in a vertical slot in the lower end of the toe-standard, and a spring I, which is attached to the base, bears at its free end against the under side of the said lever and normally holds it elevated.
K designates a pitinan, which is pivoted at its lower end to the foot-lever between the toe and heel supports, and is provided at its upper end with a latch to embrace the last and the shoe which is arranged thereon. This latch consists of the rigid strap L, of metal or other suitable material, provided with'a series of perforations M M and the flexible strap l of leather or other suitable material, provided at its free end with a pin 0 to fit in the said perforations in the rigid strap. This pin is provided with a series of notches or serrations 0 0 to engage the perforations of the rigid strap, and thereby hold the pin in the desired position.
The operation of the improved clamp will be readily understood. After turning the last around away from the toe-support the shoe is slipped thereon, the upper end of the toe-support is arranged in the proper position to support the toe of the last, the latch is arranged over the last and shoe, and when the lever is depressed the pitman is drawn down and the shoe isthereby clamped firmly on the last. i The straps comprising the latch are attached at their lower ends to eyes P P,which are fitted in a notch p in the upper end of the pitman, and are held in place by a transverse bolt p.
The ob jectof the swinging toe-standard is to enable lasts of different sizes to be used,
and to enable the upper end of the said sup port to be arranged under the desired point of the last.
The advantage of the rigid pitman over the flexible straps commonly connected to the pit man to pass over the last is that when the latch is disengaged from the last it is held adjacent to the latter and within reach of the operator, whereas a strap will drop.
Having thus described the invention, I claim-- 1. In a shoe-pegging jack, the combination, with a suitable base, of a rigid standard having a shoe-last swiveled on its upper end, the toe-support pivoted to the base and adapted to be inserted at its upper end under the toe of the last, the operating-lever pivoted to said standard, and the pitman pivoted at its lower end to said lever and connected bya strap at its upper end. to the last, substantially as and in the manner described.
2. In a peggi1ig-jack,tl1e combination,with
the heel and toe supports having a last bearlng thereon and the lever pivoted to the heelried by the upper end of said pitman, a rigid perforated strap L, connected to one of said loops, and a flexible and extensible strap N, connectedto the other of said loops and car,- rying at its free end a serrated pin 0, adapted to engage the perforations in said strap L, as and for the purpose set forth.
4. Ina pegging-j ack, the combination of the base, the stationary heel-support having a shoe-last attached to its upper end, the swinging toe-support pivoted at its lower end to the base and provided with avertical slot, the foot-lever pivoted to the heel-support and operating at its free end in the slot of the toesupport, the rigid pitman connected at its lower end to the said lever and provided at its upper end With a latch to embrace the last, and the spring bearing against the under side of the foot-lever to normally hold the same elevated, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two Witnesses;
JOSHUA ADAM DILL.
Witnesses:
