Description

D. B. TIBBETTS.
Machines for Rubhing Heel-Scams.
' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
DANIEL B. TIBBETTS, OF NORTH WEYMOUTH, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO IIIMSELF AND AUGUSTUS BEALS, OF SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENTYIN MACHINES-FOR RUBBING HEEL-S'EAMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l 51,731, dated June 9, 1574; application tiled May 9, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DANIEL B. TrBBETTs, of North Veymouth, Norfolk county, Massachusetts, have invented a Machine for Rubbing Heel-Scams, of which the following is a specification The purpose of this invention is to provide an efcient means of confining a boot or shoe upper or vamp securely in place upon a block or form while its heel-seam is being rubbed down; and consists in the employment, in combination with such form, and a suitable base or support, of a peculiar shape of a swinging yoke or frame governed by a trcadle, the whole being as hereinafter explained.
In the drawings accompanying this specifi-y cation, Figure 1 is a side elevation, and Fig.
' 2 a vertical section, of my invention.
In these drawings, A represents a bar or base which, in use, is to be afxed to a bend or other suitable means ofsupport, and of such size as to properly support the rubbing bed or block B, which is applied to it in a removable manner by a dovetailed spline and groove, or otherwise, in order to be readily changed to accommodate different sizes or styles of boots, the upper edge or surface of this bed or form B being of such curvature or outline as may be requisite. The base A is of a tapering or frusto-pyramidal shape, in cross-section, and
` to its rear part I pivot the lower or rear end of a yoke or clasp, C, whose inner width is somewhat greater than the narrowest width of the base A, and somewhat less than the greatest width ot such base, in order that when the clasp is brought down forcibly upon said base it shall gripe or clamp the latter with great power, or any object placed upon it. The clasp C is connected with a pedal, D, by a connecting-rod, E, and this pedal is to be pivoted to the floor below the bench, and provided with an elevating spring, F, which compels thc clasp O to assume an upright position in rear of the form B until depressed by the action of the workmans foot upon the pedal.
In the operation of this machine the boot or shoe upper is placed upon or over the bar A, and with its heel-seam resting upon the-top of the bed or form.v The workman now forcibly depresses the pedal with his foot, and the clasp descends and confines the boot upper to the tapering bed with greatA power, and confines it securely in place while its heel-seam is being rubbed down and the Welt trimmed off.
The device is extremely simple, durable, and effective, and will prove a Valuable adjunct to boot and shoe manufacturers.
I claim- The frusto pyramidal or tapering base A and clasp O, in combination withthe connectin g-rod E and lever D, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
DANIEL B. TIBBETTS.
