MACHINE FOR ATTACHING BOOT OR SHOE HEELS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 324,279, dated August 11, 1885.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN TINGLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for Attaching Boot and Shoe Heels, which Improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a front View of a machine embodying my invention, apart of the wheel thereof being broken away. Fig. 2 represents avertic-al section thereof. Figs. 3, 4., and 5 represent different views of the heelclamp. Fig. 6 is a View of a detached portion of Fig. 1.

My invention relates to improvements in machines for attaching boot or shoe heels; and it consists in providing a movableplatform on which rests a sliding last of a peculiar construction, with means for raising and lowering said platform and last, and a stirrup secured to a frame on which the said platform is sup ported, together with a heel-clamp, said parts being arranged and combined as hereinafter fully set forth.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a frame which supports a table, B. Firmly secured to the upper side of said table by belts or otherwise is a stirrup, 0, consisting of two uprights connected at the upper ends by a crosspiece, and made of sufficient strength to withstand the upward blow of a last.
D represents a platform having on its under side, at the central portion thereof, a rolling socket-joint connection, E, with a rod, F, the lower end of which rod is bifurcated, constituting a yoke which rests on an eccentric, G, rigidly secured to the shaft H. The shaft H, which is formed with flanges, or may-have collars serving to steady and secure the bifurcated part of the rod F when the shaft is rotated, has suitable bearings in the frame A, and is provided on one of its ends with a wheel, J, and a clutch mechanism, the said clutch being constructed of a flanged disk, K, on the shaft H, and lugs L on the hub of the wheel J, and adapted to permitthe backward motion of the wheel about one-eighth of a revolution with- I out a corresponding movement of the shaft, this being effected by having the projection to, on the inner face of the flanged portion 2) of the disk K, of such circumferential length as to permit a limited motion of the lugs of the wheel when the wheel is connected to the disk and revolved backward.

Working in a groove, (1, of the platform is a sliding last, N,which is composed of a main part, c, or nail-driver support, having an extended base and a hollow uprightportion,vertically-arranged headed nail-drivers f, corresponding in number and position to the vertical perforations in the nail-block h, the said drivers being secured to the upper face of the part 6 by a perforated plate, 9, a nail-block, h, having several sets of Vertical perforations, h, as desired, a nail-block cap, 9', having but one set of perforations, a spring, it, made either of rubber or coiled wire, a nut, Z, anda screw, m. To accommodate heels of different heights and sizes the nail-block caps j are made of different thicknesses, and have the curved row of perforations of different diameters. To the lower side of the nail-block h is secured a stud, n, which bears on the spring 70, resting on the nut Z of the screw m within the hollow upright portion of the nail-driver support 6. The screw m and nut Z are of use to regulate the distance between the nail-block and naildriver support, as may readily be understood.
\Vithin the stirrup O, and adj ustably secured to the top cross-piece thereof, is a receiver, 1?, for a shoe and heel holding clamp, Q, the latter being formed as hereinafter described.
R represents an outer box or shell composed of two parts hinged at the rear end by aspring which serves the double purpose of a hinge and a spring to open the box when released. The said box R has two handles-onc on each half of the shell-and within the same is a perfectly-fitting heel-socket formed of two pieces, S S, each piece having a flange, T, extending toward the wall or sides of the box R, covering the floor thereof, except the portion to be occupied by the top-lift of the heel.
For the purpose of steadying the platform Fitting loosely in two holes in each of the flanges T, countersunk from the under side, are bolts p, upon each of which is placed aspring, U, which may be either of rubber or coiled metal, as desired. The socket-piecesS S are secured within the shell R by means of bolts or screws passing from the outside of the floor of the said shell, and having nuts thereon on the inner side.
Resting upon the springs U are thin plates V, having a wing extending therefrom between the springs and the side walls of theshell. On the plate Varc placed leather or metal guards XV, made adj ustablc by means of nuts and washers on the bolts p. The said plates V form a secure and steady bearing for the said bolts 1), and thereby the springs U thereon. They also form a firm backing for the leather guards \V, which come in contact with the sliding last and protect the said guards from the wear which would result from the contact with the springs U.
Passing through both sides of the shell R are screws X, bearing against the downwardly-extending wing of the angle-iron V, and which serve to steady or secure the clamp in the receiver. The springs Uyield when hard pressed by the shoe, thus preventing abrasion of the portion of the uppers at the channel of the heel.
The guards XV may be omitted, if desired, the angle-irons V performing in that case the functions of the said guards.
The clampreceiver I is suitably provided with stops and means for securing and steadying the heel-clamp when placed therein.
The operation is as follows: The heel to be attached is placed within the clamp-box R and in its proper position next to the shoe, which is grasped by the leather guard W entering the channels of the shoe. Nails having been placed in the nail-block h, the shoe is drawn over the last, which, by means of the handles of the shell 1%, is now slid beneath the clampreceiver, the latter being made adjustable to different heights by means of two screws, Y, through the top of the stirrup and the screwwheel Y. The shaft H is then rotated, when the platform D is raised by means of the cocentric G- and the parts a and h of the sliding last brought together, whereby the drivers f force the nails which are in the perforations into the sole and heel, thus fastening the parts of the shoe together. A further rotation of the shaft lowers the platform and permits the spring L- to return the naitblock to its normal position. The spring is also operates in securing the required pressure of the leather when the shoe is on the last before the nails enter the heel. The socket formed by the pieces S S supports the overhanging parts of the heel during the pressure thereon due to the upward movement of the last, thus preventing the blow from depressing the outer edge of the heel and making the same irregular. The sliding last is then moved from beneath the clampreceiver 1., when the shoe can be taken from the last and readily removed from the heelclamp.
The machine herein described is designed for attaching trimmed heels, owing to the inner contour or shape of the socket-pieces, they being formed after casts from finished heels.
Having thus described myinvention, what I. claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A heel-attaching machine having a table, a movable platform, a sliding last working in a groove on said platform, a stirrup connected to said table, and a clamp-receiver adjustabl y attached to said stirrup, all of said parts being arranged and combined substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A table in combination with a platform, means for raising and lowering the platform, a sliding last working in a groove on said platform, a stirrup secured to said table, and a clamp-receiver adj ustably attached to said stirrup, all of said parts being arranged and combined substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a heel-attaching machine, the platform 1), provided witha sliding last, in combination with the rod F, eccentric G, shaft if, having flanges I), provided with projections a, and the wheel J, having lugs L, being of less circumferential length than the distance between the ends of the projection to, whereby the wheel J may have a limited backward motion, when locked with the disk, without rotating the shaft H in the same direction, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. A heel-attachingmachine in combination with a heel-clamp composed of an outer shell,
a heel-socket and springs, and a leather guard,
said guard resting on said springs and adjustably attached to said heel-socket, which rests in said outer shell and is secured thereto, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
5. A heclattaching machine in combination with a heel-clamp having the following parts: a shell composed of two sections united by a spring-l1inge, a heel-socket having flanges sccurely attached to the inner part of said shell, springs, iron plates provided with wings or downwardly-extending projections, said plates resting on said springs, all of said parts being combined and. arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
6. In a heel-attaching machine, a sliding last having the following parts: a nail-driver support, drivers, a nail-block, a nail-block cap, springs, and means, substantially as described, for adjusting the distance between the nail-block and the naildriver support to accommodate heels of different heights, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
