Be it known that I, THOMAS JOEL time, a citizen of the United States, residing' at Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Combined Led ger and Letterlliile, of which the following is a specilication.

lhis invention relates to a combined ledger and letter-iile.

ln the conduction of a mail-order business wherein large numbers of orders involving' comparatively small sums of money are received daily the burden of expense precludes the possibility of maintaining' a regular bookkeeping' system. For this reason it is customary in general practice to preserve the record of the various orders by means of a card-index system in which a separate card is lilled out and filed away for each order, the correspondence relating thereto being attached usually to the card by means of a rubloer band or other suitable fastening' device. (-,lreat annoyance and loss of time are caused. frequently through the improper filing of the cards. Furthermore, the correspondence in some cases becomes detached from the cards. Customers often are lost through this unavoidable defect in the card-index system.

rlhe object of the present invention is to enable a large number of ledger accounts involving' small amounts of money, together with the correspondence relating thereto, to be quickly and conveniently liled away without the possibility of losing either the account or the correspondence.

W ith the foregoing' and other minor objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides, broadly, in an improved. ledger and letter-tile comprising a plurality of leaves bound .in book form and cach having a pocket provided with a ledgerblank on the outside thereof.

lhe invention also resides in the particular combination and arrangement of parts and in the precise details of construction hereinafter described and claimed as a practical embodiment thereof.

Referring to Figs. l, 2, and 3, A designates a leaf which is adapted to be combined with a plurality of similar leaves and bound into book forni in any suitable manner. lhe leaf A comprises sections l and 2, which serve to produce a suitable pocket therebetween adapted to receive letters or other memoranda. The section 2 at its ends is preferably bent around and pasted to the section l, as indicated at 3 4, and the section l is formed with a suitable side extension 5, forming` a tab adapted to receive an index-letter. rlhe leaf A is provided on each side with a plurality of ledger-blanlzs (j ,7 8 and so on, said blanks being arranged in any manner suitable for the purpose.

ln using' the improved ledger and letter-lile of this invention the name, amount of order, and other necessary details of a small pur chase are entered in the ledger-blank and the correspondence is placed in the pocket formed between the sections l and 2 of the leaf. lfn this way by means of a suitable index the bookkeeper may turn to the proper place to lind not only the account, but likewise the correspondence connected therewith. l'Vhen a number of ledger-blanks are provided upon a leaf having' but a single pocket, it is preferable to place the letters relating to the various accounts in regular order, so that the correspondence of the upper account will be on top of the corresljiondr-mce referring to the other accounts.

`ln Figs. el, 5, and t3 a modified form of an improved ledger and letter-[ile illustrated, said modified form being peculiarly adapted foi` maintaining the correspondence relating to one account separate from the correspondence relating to the remaining accounts. ln this form of the .invention the leaf B is provided on its opposite sides with a plurality of pockets il, 10, ll, 12, and 1.3, each of said pockets having on the outside thereof a ledgerblank of any suitable form. Although the pockets can be formed in any suitable manner, it is preferable to produce the two lower pockets 11.3 by means of a sheet of material doubled upon itself and straddling the lower edge of the leaf. 'lhe pockets 9, l0, ll, and l2 are formed by doubling the sheets of material upon themselves and causing' them to straddle the side edge of the leaf, as indicated at 14 in Fig. 6. In using this form of the combined ledger and letter-file the details of the mail-orders are entered in the ledgerblank and the correspondence is placed in the pocket to which said ledger-blank relates.

From the foregoing description it will be apparent that a number of accounts involving small amounts can be kept in such manner that the possibility of losing or misplacing one of the accounts, as in card-index systems, is avoided. Furthermore, the time and labor which are necessary in filing away large numbers of cards are saved.

The ledger-sheets of this invention are bound together in any suitable manner, preferably by passing suitable paper-fastening devices through the small perforations shown in Figs. l and 4.

Minor changes in the precise embodiment of the invention illustrated and described may be made within the scope of the following claims without departing' from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is l. A combined ledger and letter-file leaf adapted to be bound in book form and having' a plurality of pockets on each face thereof.

a part of the pockets being formed by doubling suitable sheet material and causing' it to straddle the lower edgeof the leaf, and the remaining pockets being formed by doubling suitable sheet material and causing it to straddle one of the side edges of the leaf, each of said pockets being separate from the others and having on the outside thereof a ledgerblank.

2. A combined ledger and letter-file leaf' adapted to be bound in book form and having a plurality of pockets on each face thereof, the lower pocket being formed by doubling a sheet of suitable material and causing it to straddle the lower edge of the leaf, and the remaining pockets being formed by doubling sheets of suitable material and causing them to straddle one of the side edges of the leaf at a right angle to the lower pocket, each of said pockets being separate from the others and having on the outside thereof a ledgerblank.
