Description
@niteh gram strut JOSEPH- J. DUOHESNE, OF LAOON, ILLLNQIS.
Letters Patent No. 79,740, dated July 7, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN HARVESTEBS. I
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: v
Be it known that I, JOSEPH JfDUCHESNE, of Lacon, in the county of Marshall, and State oi- Illinoiq have invented an Improved Draught-Attachment for Mowers, Reapers, 820.; and I do h'erebydeclare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction .and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification,
in which I Figure 1 is a front elevation, and Figure 2 a plan view. This invention hasfor its object to compensatefor the lateral strain brought upon the draught-animals of a reaping or mowing-machine, by the situation of-the cutter at one side of the line of draught, as will herein-:-
after. more fullyappear.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its constructionia'nd operation. v
A represents-the draught-pole or tongue of a mowing-machine, provided with the usual whiflie-tree arrangement w,for the attachment of the'pole-horses. At the front endof this draught-pole is a ferrule, 0, provided with a screw-seat, into which works a screw, :2, with a head of a diameter equal to that of the ferrule. Between this screw-head and the end of the ferrule is a curved slotted bar, 6 with a eircularhole, b, in each end. By
means of the screw (1 the her 5 may be clamped at any point-along the slot.
A chain, c, is attached to the tongue A at any convenient point, which chain is passed through one of the holes '6'. To the forward end of the chain c is attached the whifile-tree arrangement 0, which arrangement is intended for the attachment of a second pair of "animalsor leaders,or a single leader.
It will be perceived that the forward draught-animals are thrown to one side of the tongue A, by the passing of tho'chain c through the hole 6 at the end of the bar-b, the distance to one side to which they are thrown "depending upon the point at which the bar is clamped to the ferrule a. This lateral displaceinent, as it may be termed, ofthe leading span, which should. always be from the same side of the tongue as that where the cutter is situated, is intended to compensate for the lateral strain brought upon the pole-horses by the situation of the cutter at one side oi: the line of draught, The tendency of the cutter is to swerve the machine to the side on which it is placed, which tendency the stationing of the leaders on the Seine side resists.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure hyLetters Patent, is-- 1. The screw a, in 'couihination with'the ferrule-a and the slotted bar I), as and for the purpose set forth. 2. The chain c, in combination with the bar b andtongue A, as and for the purpose described.
JOSEPH J. DUGHESNE.
