Specification of Letters Patent Patented Aug. 15, 1905.
Application filed March 18, 1905. Serial No. 250,887.
To all Hill/077% it may concern.-
Be it known that we, VINoeNzo (.iUIDO'NE and MICHELE D 1c (lim's'rom no, su bj ects of the Ki ng of Italy, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Tm provements in Catch Devices for Pins and the Like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to safety devices for attaching ornaments or the like to the person.
The invention embodies a peculiar form of lock device adapted to cooperate with a pin for securing an ornament or article of intrinsic or other value to the person, so as to obviate likelihood of accidental disengagement of the same or detachment without the operation being known to the one who is wearing the article.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and accompan ying drawings.
Figure 1 is a perspective view looking toward the rear side of a device embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a central vertical sectional view. Fig. 3 is a perspective view, a portion of the casing of the device being removed to show more clearly the arrangement of the inner parts.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The device embodying the invention, as shown in the drawings, may be well utilized for securing any ornament to the person and is adapted to attach a watch or body set with precious stones to the wearer in such a manner as to prevent displacement thereof.
Referring to the drawings. the body of the device is indicated at 1, and, as above premised, the same may be set with precious stones, may have a picture of intrinsic or other value thereon, or possess any other valuable characteristics that an ornamental de vice of this character might have, said body 1 being secured to the person by means of a catch-pin 2. The body 1 is preferably composed of a casing of any suitable form, and the catch-pin may be pivoted or otherwise mounted upon the casing. In this instance elements connected at one end by a curved bar forming a pivot member 3, suitably attached to the body 1. The casing or body 1 is provided with two slots 4, through which the pointed ends of the pin 2 may pass after the same have been forced through a portion of the garment preparatory to securing the device to the person.
Mounted within the casing or body 1 is an engl'tging member consisting of a head 5, pro vided with recesses 6 near its ends to receive the pointed extremities of the pin .2. Thehead 5 1s slidable 1n the casmg l and 1s actu ated by a screw 7, adapted to be screwed into a threaded opening therein, said head being of somewhat oblong form and fitting in the casing so as not to rotate. The screw 7 is provided at its outer end with a thum b-piece 8, formed with a shoulder 9, which is provided with an annular groove 10. The screw 7 projects through a side of the casing l, the latter being notched so that the grooved por tion of the shoulder 9 may be engaged therewith to afford a swivel connection between thescrew and the casing. The screw 7 when n'iani 'iulated by means of the thumb-piece 8 will impart sliding movement to the head 5, so as to cause engagement of the head with extremities of the pin 2 after the latter have been forced into the casing through the slots 4, and when the head is once engaged with the pin it would be impossible to displace the device from the person without tearing the garment or apparel which is engaged by said pin.
The head 5 carries a hook 11, which projects through a side of the casing and which is moved correspondingly as the head is actuated by the screw 7. The mouth of the hook is closed by movement of the head forcing said hook toward the adjacent side of the casing, and it will therefore be apparent that the head 5 not only coacts with the pin .2, but cooperates with the hook or engaging member ii to prevent displacement of any part which may be received by the hook. The book 11 is readily adapted to support a watch or similar ornament, and when the head 5 is engaged with the pin .2 said head will also hold the hook 11 in such a position that the mouth thereof is wholly closed.
it will be understood that the principal feature of the invention resides in the use of the catch )in is of U form consistin of s aced l a :)in and the s )ecial construction of the head i a D I) l adapted to be advanced by the screw into engagement with the pin, substantially in the manner specified.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a body, a pin, said body having a slot to receive an end of the pin, a head slidably mounted on the body, and a screw having swivel connection with the body and operably connected with the head to cause the latter to engage or disengage from the pin.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a body, a pin, a movable head mounted on the body, a hook connected with said head, and means for actuating the head to cause engagement thereof with the pin and simultaneously actuate the hook aforesaid.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination of a body including a casing, a pin applied to the casing, said casing having an opening or slot through which an end of the pin is adapted to pass, a head mounted in the casing, a hook projected from said head and extending exterior of the casing, and a screw operably connected with the head and provided with a thumb-piece exterior of the casing.
4. In a device of the class described, the combination of a body including a casing, a pin carried by the casing and embodying spaced elements, the casing being provided with slots through which ends of the spaced elements of the pin pass, a head slidable in the casing and adapted to engage the extremities of the spaced elements of the pin, and a screw operably connected With the head between the spaced elements aforesaid for manipulating said head.
In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
