GEM-SETTING.

Application filed April 27, 1916.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LOUIS A. LARSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sioux City, in the county of VVoodbury, State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in GenrSettings; and I do hereby declare the following to be .a. full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention is directed to improvements in ewel settings, and more particularly to scarf or stick pins.
The invention has for its object to provide an article of this character constructed in such a manner that the setting of gems (an be easily and quickly removed and replaced as desired.-
A. further object of the invention is to provide an article of this character constructed in such a manner that a valuable gei'n or jewel can be removed and replaced by an imitation setting, or vice versa as the occasion may require.
With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view therethrough. Fig. 3 is a sectional View on line 3*3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the removable cylinder.
Referring to the drawing 1 indicates a casing, which may be of any suitable metal, said casing having formed in its side, and adjacent the rear wall 2 thereof a zig-zag slot 3, the purpose of which will appear later.
A removable cylinder 4 is provided, which is substantially the same length as the casing 1, but slightly smaller in diameter so that the same can readily engage therein. The cylinder 4: is provided with a section 5 which is hingedly connected adjacent the inner end of the cylinder by a pin 5 and has its upper edge provided with a semiannular bar 6, said bar having formed integral therewith prongs 7 preferably three Specification of Letters Patent.

in number, similarly shaped prongs 8 being formed integral with the upper edge of the cylinder, said prongs serving to clamp the gem 9 to the open end of the cylinder.
It will be noted that the ends of the bar (3 are provided with hooks 10 which are adapted to snap into engagement with the recesses 11 formed in the outer edge of the cylinder at, thereby firmly holding the gem clamped previous to placing the cylinder within the casing 1.
Connnunicating with the outer end of the slot 3 is a longitudinal slot 12 which is slidably engaged by the stud 13 carried by the cylinder 4- Thus it will be seen that as the cylinder is inserted in the casing 1 the stud 13 will first slide through the slot 12 and then into the zigzag slot 3, thus preventing accidental removal of the cylinder at.
When it is desired to remove the cylinder for interchanging the settings, it is obvious that the cylinder can be manipulated so that the stud thereof will disengage the slots 8 and 12.
Fixed to the closed end of the casing 1 is a pin 14- which is adapted to be engaged in a necktie or the like, but it will be of course understood that the device can be used as a stud, cuff button or other article of jewelry if desired.
hat is claimed is A setting for gems comprising a casing, said casing having a zig-zag slot formed in its wall, said slot communicating with a longitudinal slot which is formed in the casing, a cylinder having recesses in its upper edge, a section hingedly connected to the cylinder, said section having a semiannular bar fixed to its free end, said bar having gem engaging prongs carried on its top edge, prongs carried by the upper edge of the cylinder, hooks carried by the under edge of the bar for engaging the recesses in the top of the cylinder, and a stud carried by the cylinder for slidably engaging the slots.
In testimony whereof, I aiiix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
LOUIS A. LARSON.
