UNITED, STATES P TENT OFFICE.
JOHN E. ORTNER, OF lSEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
CHATELAINE-CATCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 691,566, dated January 21, 1902. Application filed October 30, 1901. Serial No. 80,491. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN E. ORTNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New J ersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chatelaine-Catches; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable othersskilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The present invention has reference to a novel construction of safety-catch or suspension device for chatelaine bags and other articles which are to be suspended by means of a chain from a belt or a part of a garment, such as a ladys dress; and the invention has for its primary object to providea simple and cheaply-constructed safety catch or hook adapted to be arranged in a locked or fixed position upon the belt or a portion of a garment, whereby the bag or other object worn is securely held in its suspended position vrlllitlfiout danger of accidental displacement or t e t.
The invention therefore consists in the novel construction of safety-catch or suspension device hereinafter fully described, and, furthermore, this invention consists in the several novel arrangements and combinations of the various parts, as well as in the details of the construction thereof, all of which will be more particularly set forth in the following specification and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claim which are appended to and form a part of the said specification.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings are two front or face views of the safety catch or device embodyingthe principles of my invention, said Fig. 1 being a representation of the safetycatch when in its locked or fixed position upon a belt or a portion of a garment,
and Fig. 2 being a representation of the said catch when the parts thereof are in their normally disengaged positions from the belt. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on line 3 3 in said Fig. 2, illustrating the holding or looking mechanism of the catch in its normally disengaged position from the belt; and Fig.
4 is a vertical section taken on line 4 4 in said Fig. 1, illustrating the parts of the holding or locking mechanism in their operated or locked positions after the catch has been arranged upon a belt on a portion of a garment. Fig. 5 is a back view of the safety catch or device, the parts being represented in their normally disengaged positions before attaching the catch upon a belt. Fig. 6 is a similar view of the device with the main suspension-hook broken away-and the remaining parts of -the device being shown in their operated positions." Fig. 7 is a back view of the said device with both the main suspensionhook and a spring broken away to 'more clearly illustrate the arrangement of a secondary suspension-hook, over which the ring connected with the chain of the chatelainebag or other article to be suspended is arranged. Fig. 8 is a perspective View of the spring employed with the several partsof the safety-catch, and Fig. 9 is a perspective View of the said secondary suspensionhook.
Similar characters of reference are endployedin all of the said above-described views to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the said drawings, the reference character 1 indicates the complete safety catch or device embodying the leading features of my present'invention, the said catch consisting, essentially, of a main bod y or plate 2, provided with a rearwardly and downwardly extending suspension-hook 3, substantially as illustrated in Figs. 3, 4, and 5, for the suspension of the safety catch or device upon a belt or a suitable part of a garment, such as the waistband of a dress. Thesaid main body or plate 2 is also provided with a suitably-arrauged opening or slot 4, and secured upon the outer face of the said body or plate 2 by means of pins or rivets 5 or any other suitable fastening means is an ornamental face-plate 6, which, as will be seen from an inspection of Figs. 3 and 4,has a chambered portion 7 in the back arranged directly above the said slot or opening 4. in the said main body or plate 2 of the catch. Slidably arranged against the back of the said j main body or plate 2 is a suspension or slide plate 8, which is made with an inwardly-extending member 9 to providea bearing 10 and with an outwardly and then inwardly curved portion 11, substantially as shown. The said curved member 11 terminates in an arm or projection 12, formed at its free end With a pair of oppositely-arranged and laterally-extending lugs 13, and the said member 11 is also provided with an opening or slot 14 for the purpose to be presently more fully set forth. At the lower end of the said suspension or slide plate 8 is a curved portion 15, which terminates in an upwardly-extending arm or finger 16 to provide a suitable hook l7. WVhen the said suspension or slide plate 8 has been arranged in its proper position against the back of the said main body or plate 2, then the arm or projection 12 has been made to extend into and project directly through the slot or opening 4 in the said plate, with the said oppositely-placed lugs 18 of the arm or projection 12 extending laterally and directly behind the longitudinal marginal edges of the said slot or opening 4, as clearly indicated in the dotted outlines in Figs. 6 and 7. At the same time the bearing 9 and the surface of the lower-hook 17 bear directly against the back of the said main body or plate 2, as clearly indicated in Figs. 3 and 4 0f the drawings, and in this manner the said secondary suspension-plate 8 is arranged in its operative and sliding position against the back of the said plate 2, as will be clearly understood. Suitably secured against the said back of the main body or plate 2 by means of rivets or pins 18 or in any other desired manner is a spring-plate or spring member 19,which is provided at or near its lower end with a suitably curved portion 20 and a teat or projection 21, as illustrated. This teat or projection 21, as will be seen from an inspection of the several figures of the drawings, extends into the slot or opening 14 of the said secondary suspension-plate in such a manner that it will not interfere with the longitudinal sliding motions of the said plate 8, but will act as a proper guide and will prevent any undue lateral displacement of the said plate 8 when the safety-catch is in constant use. Upon the said hook 17 is arranged the usual ring 22 and the chains 23, which are attached to the frame of the chatelaino-bag or to which chains may be attached any other articles.
When the several parts of the safety catch or device 1 are in their normally inoperative positions to permit of the main suspensionhook 3, which is connected with the main body or plate 2, to be readily slipped upon a belt or a suitable part of a garment, then the several parts of the mechanism are in the positions indicated in Fig. 3 of the drawings, the said curved portion 20 of the spring member or plate 19 fitting directly upon and over the curved member 11 of the said secondary suspension-plate 8; but after the said hook 3 has been arranged in its position upon the belt or the garment then the plate 8 is pulled, by means of the said ring 22, attached to the book 17, in a downward direction, causing the two edges 2% at the opposite sides of the teat or projection 21 to ride upon the outer curved or convex surface of the said curved member or portion 11 of the plate 8, as clearlyindicated in Figs. at and 6. This movement of these parts forces the curved portion 20 of the spring member or plate 19 in a direction toward the inner surface of the said main suspension-hook 3 of the main body or plate 2, whereby when the parts have been suspended over abelt or over the waistband or other suitable part of a dress the said parts will be securely clampedin such positions to the belt or garment, and thereby prevent the possibility of accidental displacement or the loss of the device by theft.
It will be clearly evident that I have devised a useful and operative safety catch or device for the purpose hereinabove stated which can be quickly and easily manipulated for its proper attachment upon a belt or a portion of a garment, from which it cannot be accidentally removed or stolen, but can be just as readily detached by the wearer of the chatelaine-bag or other articles suspended from the device.
I am fully aware that changes may be made in the several arrangements and combinations of the parts without departing from the scope of my present invention. Hence I do not limit my invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the various parts as herein described and as illustrated in the accompanyingdrawings, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of the said parts.
