To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GUSTAV A. BADER, of Rochester, in thecounty of Monroe and State and articles of a similar character; and it has for its object to provide such a device embodying'a spring-hinge for connecting the component members of the holder that shall be comparatively simple and inexpensive in construction and that shall effectual-1y serve to retain the cover of the holder in either open or closed position, thereby eliminating the necessity of employing the usual fastening devices that have proved ineffective and objectionable.

To these and other ends my invention consists in certain features of construction and arrangement to be hereinafter more fully explained, and pointed out in the claims hereunto annexed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a holder or case embodying my said invention, the cover being in its open position. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the holder with the cover thereof removed and the hinge in its closed position. Figs. 3 and 4 are sectional views on the line a; b, Fig. 1, showing the cover in its closed and open positions, respectively; and Fig. 5 is a similar view on the line 0 (Z, Fig. 1, showing the cover in a position intermediately of that of its open and closed positions.

The same numerals of reference designate similar parts in the several views.

In the present embodiment of my invention I have illustrated a holder or case that is particularly adapted to receive eyeglasses and the like, and it consists in the present instance of the body'portion 1, which preferably conforms approximately to the configuration of the eyeglasses and the cover or lid 2, a portion of which is arched or bellied, as at 3, to form a cavity within which the guards or other projections upon the eyeglasses may rest while the cover is in its closed position.

Between the body portion 1 and the cover 2 composing the holder is interposed the improved spring-hinge, embodying in the present instance the spring member 4:, preferably carried by the cover 2 and provided with a central portion or arm 5, the free end of. which is provided with a bearing 6, wings or spring-arms 7 7 being formed upon each side of the central arm 5, the function of which will presently appear, This spring member 4: is preferably shaped to conform to the contour of the arched or bellied portion 3 of the cover and is secured therein by the rivets 8 8, which secure the spring in position in such manner as to permit free motion of the central arm 5 and the springarms 7 7. The other member of the hinge is preferably carried by the body portion 1 of the holder, and it embodies in the present instance the pivot-rod'or hinge-pin 9, having its ends 9 9 secured to the portion 1 and its central portion 10 adapted to restin the bearing 6, formed upon the free end of the central arm of the spring member, laterally-disposed projections 11 11 being formed upon the rod 9at either side of the bearing 6 and arranged to bear upon the spring-arms 7 These projections 11 11 occupy such a position in relation to the body of the case that when the cover occupies a positionintermediately of its open and closed positions or a position similar to that shown in Fig. 5 they will stand in such a position that the tongue or bearing-arm 5 and the spring-arms 7 7 are separated to the maximum degree. However, when the cover is moved toward either its open or closed position these lateral projections 11 11 will assume such positions in relation to the spring-arms 7 7 that the spring action of the latter and of the spring-bearing arm 5 will cause the cover tocomplete its motion and to remain in either its open or closed position, as the case may be, under the yielding action of said spring members. Therefore it will be understood that when the cover is at either side of its central position the tendency of the projections 'under the action of the spring members will be to retain the cover in either its open or closed position.

It will of course be understood that while the component members of the hinge may be applied to the holder or case in any desired manner I prefer such an arrangement where-' in the spring-plate 4 is carried by the cover 2, for the reason that When a holder is employed the cover of which is provided with an arched or bellied portion 3, similar to that illustrated in the present embodiment, this spring-plate can be formed to fit Within the cavity of such portion for the purpose of stifiening the cover sufliciently to resist the straining action of the spring members 5 and 7 7 of said plate.

I claim as my invention 1. A case or holder for eyeglasses and the like, composed of two com ponent parts hinged together by a spring hinge embodying a spring member carried by one part of the ease and having a bearing-arm and spring-arms at either side thereof, and a hinge-pin journaled on said bearing-arm and having projections adapted to engage said spring-arms.

2. A holder for eyeglasses, comprising a receptacle and a cover hinged thereto by a spring-hinge embodying a spring member having a bearing-arm and spring-arms that are carried by one part of the holder, and a hinge-pin carried by the other part provided with a round portion journaled on said bearing-arm and having radial projections adapted to engage said spring-arms.

3. A holder for eyeglasses, comprising a receptacle and a cover having an arched or swelled portion hinged to said receptacle by a correspondingly-formed spring-hinge enibodying a spring member rigidly secured to the arched or swelled portion of the cover and provided with a bearing portion and springarms formed integrally, and a hinge-pin carried by the other member of the holder having a bearing on said bearing portion and straining projections adapted to bear against said spring-arms.
