FASTENER FOR CAN-COVERS.

To all whmn it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL W. ROBERTS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cleveland, county of Ouyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fasteners for Can-Covers, ofwhich the following is a specification, the principle of the invention being herein explained and the best mode in which I have contemplated applying that principle, so as to distinguish it from other. inventions.
My invention relates to fasteners for cancovers, and particularly to such fasteners as are adapted to temporarily bind the covers tightly to the can.
Said invention consists of means hereinafter fully described, and specifically set forth in the claims.
'The annexed drawings and the followin description set forth in detail certain mechanism embodying the invention, such disclosed means constituting but one of various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.
In said annexed drawings, Figure 1 represents a broken vertical sectional View of a can and my invention applied thereto, the cancover and fastening member being shown detached. Fig. 2 represents aplan view of a can-cover and the fastening member, the latter being shown in two positions, one of said positions being illustrated'in dotted lines.
My invention is adapted to be applied to cans or other receptacles for paints or similar liquid products, and comprises, in combination with the can A, a cover B, which is designed to be fitted within a marginal offset or, provided at the top of the can, the cover B being provided with a peripheral flange b, bent outwardly at the top, as shown at b, Fig. 1, for the purpose of engaging the 011- set a. An annular independent member O is designed to hold the cover B .tightly in contact with the can A, as will now be fully described. This member O is made of springsteel or other material which will spring under considerable pressure and is broken, as shown in Fig. 2, one of the ends, 0, normally bending in and slightly over the other end, 0, so that when the member O is not pressed out into perfect circular form, as shown in dotted lines in said Fig. 2, the diameter of said memperfect annular form it is adapted by virtue of the length in which it is made to exert considerable pressure upon the flange Z) of the cover 3 and to press the same tightly up against the can A. To effect this straightening out of the element or member O or its relaxation, as is desired, easily and efliciently, I have provided a lever D, substantially of the construction shown in Fig. 2. This lever is provided with an eccentric rounded head cl, adapted to fit within and v snugly engage the end 0 of the member C, which end is depressed for this purpose, as shown, and an offset (2, adapted to lie flush with the end 0 when the element O is lying in its closed position, as shown in full lines, Fig. 2. V The lever D may easily be inserted in the end 0 and against the under side of the end 0', as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, and then by depressing the same down against the member O, as shown in full lines is said figure, the element C may be straightened out into perfectly circular form and held with considerable pressure against the cover B, the latter, consequently, tightly binding the can A.
It will be noted that the construction provided afi'ords ready means of sealing the can efiiciently whenever desired and that such seal may be broken without destroying or injuring any parts of the fastener by merely raising the lever D and allowing the end 0 of the member 0 to spring inwardly into its normal position, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2.
