SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 336,730, dated February 23, 1386.

Application filed December 8, 1885.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILL FOSTER McFAR- LAND, of Pleasantville, in the county of Fairfield and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Jar Covers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which Figure l is a perspective view of ajar having my improved cover applied. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section taken on line as a: in Fig. 1.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawings.

The object of my invention is to provide a cover for jars which will be securely held when in place upon the jar, but which may be readily removed when desirable.

The invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

The cover A, which is of about the same diameter as the rim B of thejar O, is made of wood rendered water-proof by varnish, paint, or otherwise. To diametricallyopposite edges of the cover are secured the wire fasteners D. Each fastener consists of a wire curved to embrace about one-quarter of the circumference of the jar 0, having an outwardly projecting 100p, E, in the middle of the curved part for convenience in applying and removing the cover. The wire at the ends of the curved part is bent outward, and is carried beyond the rim B of the jar, then upward to a point opposite the edge of the cover A, where it is bent into spirals F. Beyond the spirals F the ends of the wire are bent over the top of the cover and downward at right angles, passing some distance into the cover. Between. the right-angled ends of the wire and the coils F the wire is secured by staples G.

The spring-fasteners D are formed of iron or steel spring-wire, copper-coated, or of brass wire.

The cover is placed on the jar by bringing one of the spring-fasteners D into engagement with the side of the jar under the rim B, then pulling out the other fastener until it will pass over the rim B, then pushing down the cover until it is in contact with the top of the jar, then releasing the spring-fastener, allowing it to engage the rim of the jar. The cover is removed by pulling out one of the spring-fasteners by means of the loop E, then lifting the cover.

My improved cover may be adapted to jars of all sizes, and when applied is not liable to be accidentally removed.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The combination, with the cover A, of spring fasteners D, each formed of a wire looped in the middle, curved to conform to the curvature of the jar, bent outward and upward to pass the rim of the jar, having coils F formed near its ends and secured to the cover A beyond the coils F, as herein specified.

2. As an improved article of manufacture, a spring-fastened jar-cover formed of the cover A and the spring-fastener D, consisting of a wire curved to conform to the curvature of the jar, bent outward in the center to form a loop, E, bent outward at the ends of the curved portion, then upward, having formed near the ends thereof coils F, and having the extremi ties of the wire bent over the top of the cover A, and downward into the material of the cover, and secured by the staples G, substantially as herein specified.
