CLOSURE-FASTENER-FOR CROCKS, 800.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 4, 1906.
Application filed June 2, 1906. Serial N0. 319,906-
State of West Virginia, have invented certain new-and useful Improvements in Closure-Fasteners for Crooks, &c.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and usethe same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this Specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in fastening means for closures for crooks, jars, and other receptacles, and comprises a simple and efficient means consisting of a closure with a flange adapted to fit over the rim of the crock and in the provision of a spring-finger fixed to the inner surface of the flange and adapted to frictionally engage the inclined or curved surface of the rim of the receptacle.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Flgure 1 is a sectional view through a crock having a closure with my improved fastening device; and Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the closure, showing the fastening device projecting therefrom.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a crock or receptacle which may be of any size or shape and is provided with a rim B about its top, which rim in the drawings is shown as bemg slightly curved or may be inclined, if desired.
O is a closure having a flange D about its edge and preferably a screen E over an aperture therein for the purpose of ventilation.
F designates a resilient finger, preferably flat, which is fastened to the flange of the 5 cover, with its free end extending at an inclination and slightly curved away from the flange. Said resilient finger is preferably of such a length as to contact with the entire width of the rim about the crock, as shown clearly in the sectional view of the drawings, and against which rim the inner surface of the finger is adapted to frictionally bear, being under tension, as will be understood, when the closure is adjusted in place. Said finger is of suflicient strength to cause the entire flange to be held frictionally against the rim of the crock or jar, making it necessary to apply a little pulling force to remove the closurewhen desired.
In applying the closure the portion of the flange thereof adjacent to the resilient finger is first caught underneath the rim of the crock and afterward the closure pushed down over the top of the receptacle, said finger yielding to allow the flange to fit Over the crock.
WVhat I claim is- 1. In combination with a crock having an outwardly-extending rim about the top thereof, a flanged closure adapted to fit over said rim, a resilient finger fixed to the inner surface of Said flange and adapted to frictionally engage the face of said rim, whereby the closure may be frictionally held upon the crock, as set forth.
2. In combination with a crock having an outwardly-extending rim with a curved surface, a flanged closure, a resilient finger fixed to said flange and curved longitudinally to conform to the curvature of said rim which it' is adapted to engage, whereby the closure may be held frictionally upon the crock, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affiX my Signature in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM E. DAWSON.
Witnesses: Y O. D. BENNETT, GEO. P. HOLT.
