Description

PATENTBD JUL-Y 25, 1905. M. W. MAYER. STOCKING.
APPLICATION FILED AUG. 10, 1804 51 onto a 'l whom W y Y q villimowo ANDREW a cmlm co. rniirommnm mu \IIASHINKITON nv c UNITED srArns PATENT OFFICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 25, 1905.
Application filed August 10, 1904. Serial No. 220,259.,
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MAX W. MAYER, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York, borough of Manhattan, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stockings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved stocking which is mainly intended for the use of nrisses and boys and which by the employment of a reinforced rib-top and an auxiliary reinforced rib at some distance below the rib-top provides a very strong and convenient attachment for the garter-grip,which latter can be applied either to the top-orthe auxiliary rib, as desired, so as to support thereby the hose in more convenient manner; and for this purpose the invention consists of a stocking which is provided below its reinforced rib -top with a second auxiliary rib separated from the rib-top by a suitable space of ordinary stitch, so that the upper end of the stocking is thereby strengthened for the attachment of the hose-supporter, saidreinforced rib-top and auxiliary reinforced rib-top and intermediate portion of ordinary stitch being arranged in the stocking above the knee portion.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved stocking; and Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical longitudinal section on line 2 2, Fig. 1, of the upper or top part of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre- I sponding parts.
In the drawings, a indicates a stocking such as are used by misses and boys. The stocking is provided at its upper end with a top made in reinforced rib-stitch b and at a short distance below the same with a second auxiliary band or stripe that is also made of reinforced rib-stitch c, being separated from the top band by an intermediate portion of ordinary stitch d. The top as well as the auxiliary stripe of rib-stitch are used for attaching the grips to the hose-supporter, so as to keep the stocking in place. The second auxiliary reinforced stripe is for the purpose of permitting the attachment of the grip at a greater distance from the upper end of the stocking in case the same is too long or in case the hose-sup orter has lengthened by wear, and ives a getter fit when attached to a point be ow the top of the stocking. By means of the reinforced lower stripe or rib c the support of the stocking by the grip of the hose-supporter is facilitated and the application of the grip to the band of the stocking below the reinforced top rib, by which the stockings are easily torn, is entirely obviated, as the supporter is attached to the auxiliary rib-band.
The rib-top maybe turned inside the stocking or outside, as preferred. The reduced portion serves as an elastic or expansible joint, whereby a bunglesome fold is avoided and a smooth neat appearance is provided for, besides permitting the bifurcated portions of the suspender to straddle the edge of the stocking when folded down to clasp the reinforced rib-band, thus providing for an adjusted Suspender or a long or short stocking, as the case may be.
The reinforced rib-top and the reinforced auxiliary stripe or rib serve to attach the clasp or buckle of the garter and prevent the tearing of the stocking at its upper end, which is objectionable with the boys and the misses stockings at present in use.
i It is obvious that in addition to the second auxiliary rib a third auxiliary rib below the same may be used, as I do not desire to confine myself to the use of a single auxiliary rib.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A stocking, the upper portion of which is provided with a narrow reinforced rib-top, an auxiliary reinforced strip or band adjacent the rib-top and above the knee portion, and a narrow separating portion of ordinary stitch between said rib-top and said auxiliary band.
2. A stocking, the body portion of which is made of ordinary stitch, the upper portion bein provided with a reinforced rib-top, an auxi iary reinforced strip or band adjacent the rib-top and above the knee portion, and narrow separating portion between said rein.- forced portions made in the same stitch as the body portion.
3. A garter-top stocking provided with an annular reinforced rib-top at its upper end, an auxiliary reinforced annular' rib-band worked in the stocking and above the knee portion, a reduced elastic portion between the said rib top and band, the said reduced elastic portion forming a joint whereby the reinforced portions may fold over each other in the manner and for the purpose specified.
4. As an article of manufacture a stocking provided with an annular reinforced rib-top at its upper end, an annular auxiliary rein- In testimony that I claim the foregoing as forced rib-band a predetermined distance bemy invention I have signed my name in preslow the upp: rig-top and above thle kneg ence of two subscribing Witnesses.
