Description

JOHN N. WATR'OUS, OF WEST MERIOEN, CONNECTICUT.
Letters Patent A70. 79,525, dated Jurre 30, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-SUPPORTER.
die tlgehitle rifatte tu in time Lfters @anni zum noting @an ut tigt smut.-
M TO ALL WHOM II vMAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JOHN N. WATROUS, of West Meriden, in the county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented anew Improvement in Window-Fastening; and I do hereby decla-rc the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the' same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, ill- Figure 1, a perspective view,
Figure 2 a top view,
Figure 3a sectional view, on line x z, lookingto the rear, and in Figure 4 a view on the sameline, looking to the front.
This invention relates to an improvement in that class of window-springs designed for supporting both the lower and'upper sash, and consists in the arrangement of two springs, the one to operate upon theupper and the other upon the lower sash, and each combined with its own follower, both 'acted upon by the same power,
and so that by turning the follower in one direction will draw in the spring-of and relieve the lower sash, and
turning in the other direction will draw in the spring of and relieve the upper sash, and so that either may vbe adjusted and secured at pleasure and independent of each other. I
To enable others to construct my improvement, I will proceed to describe the same as illustrated the accompanying drawings.
A is the spring-frame for the lower sash, and'B the spring-frame for the upper sash, -to each of which 'is fxed a at steel spring, respectively A and'B, the two frames combined and united, and froml each extends" an arm, C, back, and supporting, in `proper bearings, a follower, D; andin the free end of each of the springs is yolfzed respectively a bolt, A2 and B2, the said bolts extending back in the form of a yoke, E and F, to thefollower D. Upon the said follower, and corresponding to their respective yokes, I form astrid', a, above, for
'operating the bolt B2, andv upon ,the under side ofthe follower a stud, to operate the bolt` AsoA that by turnngthe said follower in one direction, as to the position in blue, iig. 3, the. bolt B2 will. be drawn in, as also denoted in blue in said` fig. 3. Turning inI the other direction, the lower stud, b, draws the otherl bolt, A?, into the-position` denoted in blue in fig. 4,. their respective springs being suicient to always force out the bolt when free.
The spring is set into the frame in the proper position, so as at the same time to bear upon both sashes;
gnd through the frame, fromthe inside, I insert a spindle, H, upon which is fixed?, knob or lever, by' which the v`.springs may be operated iu the manner before described.
'Ihe fridtion of the bolts, occasioned by the pressure of their respective springs, is suilcient to support an Vordinary sash in any position; but at such points as it is desired to lockthe sashes, a. notch should be.cut into the sash, so that-the bolt entering the said notch would lock-the sash in that position.
I do not wi'sh to be understood as broadly claiming the arrangement of springs to support both .the upper` und lower sash operated by a common lever, as such, I am aware, is well known. t l ,y Having thusV fully described my invention, what I claim las new and useful, andtdesire to secure by Letters Patent, is- A v The two spring-frames A. and B, combined in a single case, providedrespectively with springs- A1 and B?,
and bolts A2 and B2, thcyo'ke of each bolt extending back to the follower or armed hub iD, which has itsibearings in the side projections C and C', and'operating by the rotation of the spindle II, so as to withdraw either of the bolts, substantially in the manner herein set forth.
' JOHN N. WA'IROUS.
