COAL-CHUTE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 795,043, dated July 18, 1905.
Application filed January 26, 1905. Serial No. 242,729.
To a whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT L. KooH, a citi- Zen of the United States of America, residing at East Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coal- Chutes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in coal-chutes, and more particularly to a chute which is adapted to be used as auxiliary means for directing and guiding material to a predetermined point.
The object of this invention is to provide a chute of this type which is especially adapted for use as a coal-chute in connection with a wagon or cart chute and a bin or basement into which the coal is to be deposited.
The chute as constructed by me is extremely simple in construction, strong and durable, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, and it is adapted to be supported adjacent to the opening in which the coal or material is to-be deposited.
Briefly described, my improved chute comprises a segment-shapedor curved pipe, which is preferably constructed of sheet metal. The pipe adjacent to its one end is provided with an annular flange, which is adapted to support the pipe in an opening formed in the pavement or the receptacle into which the coal is to be deposited. In connection with the chute I employ a triangular support, which is secured to the upper end of the pipe to further brace and support the same adjacent to the opening.
The above construction will be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this application, and wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout both views, in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of my improved chute, and Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of a support used in connection with the chute.
To demonstrate the practical use of my improved chute, I have illustrated the same as a coal-chute and have mounted the chute in a manhole or coal-opening 1, formed in a pavement or street 2. The chute, as indicated by reference-numeral 3, is preferably constructed of sheet metal and is slightly curved in contour. In cross-section the chute is circular in form and in its entirety resembles a pipe. The opening 1 is generally provided with an annular flanged ring 4;, which is adapted to protect the edges of the opening and form a seat for a suitable lid or cover. (Not shown.) The one end of the chute is provided with an annular flange 5, which when the chute is in position is adapted to rest upon the annular ring I. The opposite end of the chute is cut at an angle to its other end and is provided with an annular flange 6. This end of the chute is adapted to support the wagon or cart chute 7, which guides the coal or material into the opening 1.
To support the upper end of the chute 3, I have employed a strap 8, the ends of which are secured together by a pin or bolt 9, and upon this bolt between the ends of said strap I pivotally mount a substantially triangular support 10, the base of said triangular support being adapted to rest upon the pavement or street 2 and brace and support the upper end of the chute.
The chute is employed to prevent the coal or material being unloaded from becoming deposited on the pavement or street and interfering with the traific of said street or persons passing by the opening in which the coal is being deposited.
It will be observed from the foregoing de scription, taken in connection with the drawings, that my improved chute may be quickly and easily placed in position and that the same can be readily carried by a coal wagon or cart.
It will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit and scope of my invention.
