WAGON SKEIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 688,723, dated December 10, 190i. Application filed May 11, 1901- Serial No. 591828. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD H. DEWES, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have in vented 5 certain new and useful Improvements in Wagon-Skeins, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in wagon-skeins; and it consists in the novel arrangement, construction, and combination of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and set forth in the claims.
The object of this invention is to construct a skein in such a manner as to prevent sand, dirt, or any foreign substance from finding lodgment upon the axle.
A further object of my invention is that by the manner in which I construct my improved skein the hoods and shields now made use of are entirely dispensed with.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my complete skein with the axle-box in position. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the skein and axle-box in their relative position, showing the construction. 3 is a top plan View with a part broken away. Fig. at is a bottom plan View of the same.
In the construction of the device as shown I provide a body 1, integral with which is formed a cylindrical tapering portion 2, which is the axle of the skein. At the base of the axle, where it terminates into the body 1, is formed a curvilinear flange 3, arranged to project over the axle-box 4 and extend within a short distance from the hub of thewheel, being indicated by the dotted line in Fig. 2. The flange, as will be observed by referring to Fig. 2, is tapered at an angle from a point about the center of the body downward to the bottom and its edge gradually rounded, as indicated by the numeral 5, the purpose of this being to allow all foreign substances or objects which might'pass within the recess 6, formed by the flange, to pass out. Thus by the shape of the flange such substances cannotremain therein nor find their wayupon the axle within the axle-box.
I provide upon the axle-box 4 a curved 5o flange 7, which is constructed to fit within the recess 6" and is also for the purpose to as sist in preventing foreign objects from lodg ing upon the axle.
The body is provided with suitable flanges, between which are passed suitable clips for supporting the skein upon the axle-bar. I also provide a nut 8 with a flange 9, which projects within the recess of the hub and over the end of the axle-box, which also prevents sand, dirt, or like material from ontering.
In applying the box within the hub I insert it until the ends 10 of the lugs 11, formed on the box, are flush with the end of the hub, and act as a guide to limit the insertion.
The device is simple in construction, its cost is nominal, and has extraordinary advantages over the common skein.
The essential feature of this invention is the manner in which the flange and recess are 7e formed, terminating into a perfect curve, as viewed from the bottom.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim is- 1. A Wagon-skein of the class described, 75 comprising a suitable body provided with a recess formed by a flange, said flange tapering at the bottom and having its lower edge rounded, a flanged axle-box constructedto fit within the recess to prevent foreign ob- 8o jects from entering the axle substantially as specified.
2. A device of the class described, com prising a skein provided with a projecting flange, a recess formed all around the skein by said 85 flange, the lower portion of the flange being tapered and its inner edge rounded, an axle box provided with an upturned flange to correspond with the recess, each when in posi-' tion preventing sand or dirt from entering between the axle and box, and a flanged nut provided to prevent such substance from entering from the outer end, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature 5 in presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD I-I. DEWES,
Witnessesi '1. J. EIoKs, FRED Mronnns.
