SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 743,307, dated November 3, 1903. Application filed April 2, 1903. Serial No. 150,680. I (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WALTER L. MESSER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Clamps for Grinding Stones or Wheels, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in a clamp for a grinding stone or wheel of any nature; and it consists in providing means for firmly securing such stone or wheel to a spindle or axle or other support.
It further consists in means whereby the wheel can be quickly and easily removed and p a new wheel applied.
It further consists in means whereby the wheel and center can be easily handled.
It further consists of novel details of construction, all as will be hereinafter set forth.
Figure 1 represents a sectional view of a clamp for a grinding stone or wheel embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a sectional view of the parts forming the clamp in separated position and on an enlarged scale.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the clamp or clutch for a grinding stone or wheel, the same consisting of the body portion or hub B, which forms the support for the grinding stone or wheel C, said hub being adapted to enter the central opening oreye of said grinding stone or wheel.
D designates a flange extending from and forming part of the body portion and having the inner walls E thereof slightly concaved, so that the edge portion F may first come in contact with the wheel C.
G designates a flange extending inwardly from the inner wall of the body portion, being part thereof, and having I an opening H, through which a spindle may project or a stud or axle may be'inserted to securely lock the wheel with the spindle of the machine to which the device is adaptable or to said stud or axle.
J designates a loose sleeve which is fitted over the hub B against the side of the wheel 0 and is slightly concaved, so that its edge portion K may first come in contact with said side and conform to the edge F of the flange D on the opposite side of said wheel.
L designates a collar extending forwardly from the hub or body portion and having its periphery threaded for the engagement of the ring-nut M, which screws upon the collar L and abutsagainst the loose flange J, thus forcing the latter against the wheel C and serving to lock the parts securely in position.
N designates the inner wall or bore of the hub B, the same having a contour of that of the portion of a spindle, axle, &c., that may enter said bore. 7 P and Q designate hooks on the flanges J and D, which are adapted to be engaged by a grapple or other suitable device for lifting the wheel.
The operationwill be readily seen. The wheel C is placed upon the hub B against the edge portion F on the flange D, after which the sleeve J is located with its edge portion K abutting thereagainst, after which the'nut M is secured upon the collar L, thus locking the parts securely in position.
It will be seen that by unscrewing the nut M the sleeve J can be removed and a new Wheel placed in position without removing the parts from the spindle, axle, &c., the effect of which is evident.
It will be evident that various changes may be made by those skilled in the art which will come within the scope of my invention, and I do not, therefore, desire to be limited in every instance to the exact construction herein shown and described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In a'clamp for grinding-wheels, a hub adapted to pass through the opening of the wheel and threaded at its free end, an integral flange on said hub adapted to engage one side'of the wheel, a loose flange sliding freely on said hub adapted to engage the other side of the wheel and a nut on said hub abutting against said loose flange.
2. In a clamp for grinding-wheels, a hub adapted to pass through the opening of the wheel and threaded at its free end, an integral concave flange on said hub adapted to engage one side of the wheel, a loose concave flange sliding freely on said hub adapted to engage the other side of the wheel and a nut no on said hubabutting against said loose flange.
