To all whom t may concern:

` vBe it known that I, ALLIF. F. Boswonrn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Munday, in the county of Knox, State of Texas, have invented a new and useful vWagon and Buggy Tap Extension; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it a-ppertains to make and use the same.

The present invention relates to an extension for wagon and buggy taps, and has for its object to provide a device of this character which embodies novel features of construction whereby it may be used upon an old wagon or buggy in such a manner as to compensate for the wear and prevent wabbling of the wheels.

Further objects of the invention are to provide a device of this character which is simple and inexpensive in its construction, which can be applied without diiculty to the old wagon or buggy taps, and which will serve in an effective manner to compensate for the wear upon the ends of the wheels and take up the looseness which would otherwise be present.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel combinations and arrangements of the parts as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the novel features thereof being pointed out in the appended claims.

For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view through the hub of a wheel, the axle upon which the wheel is mounted being shown in side elevation, and a tap having an extension constructed in accordance with the invention being shown as applied to the threaded end of the axle.

Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the tap removed from the axle, the securing tongues of the extension being swung outwardly into inoperative position.

Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the tap.

Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the tap.

Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 5.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawing by the same reference characters.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral l designates a wagon or buggy tap which has the usual threaded opening la for engagement with the threaded end of the axle. The base l? of the tap is enlarged and substantially circular in shape, being designed to bear against the end of the wheel in the usual manner. The body portion of the tap l is rectangular or polygonal in shape so as to be readily eno'aged by a wrench or like tool when placing the tap in position or removing it therefrom.

The extension 2 is essentially in the formk of a ring or washer member which is applied to the base lb and surrounds the threaded opening la, said extension projecting inwardly from the base so as to compensate for the wear and prevent wabbling of the wheels. In applying the extension 2, a number of slits or openings 3 are provided in the periphery of the base 1b, an ordinary hack saw or drill being used for this purpose. The extension 2 is provided with a series of tongues 5 positioned in a manner corresponding to the slits 3 and adapted to be swung into and out of engagement with the same, the said tongues being pivotally connected to the member 2.

These tongues 5 are provided with openings adapted to receive wedge shaped keys 6 which serve, when driven in position, to draw the extension firmly into engagement with the base lb. This construction admits of the extension being readily applied to the old nuts or taps upon the wagon or bugg and the extension serves to take up the looseness due to wear and to prevent wabbling of the wheels.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A device of the character described, including a tap formed with a laterally projecting basal flange having a series of slits in the periphery thereof, an annular extension member itted against the base of the tap and surrounding the opening thereof, tongues pivotally connected to the annular extension member and adapted to be swung into the before mentioned slits in the flange of the tap, and means for locking the tongues in operative position.
