SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 794,776, dated July 18, 1905.
Application filed October 28, 1904. Serial No. 230,424.

Beit known that I, GEORGE E. BUNDICK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bigcane, in the parish of St. Landry and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and useful Rein-Holder, of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to rein-holders.
The object of the invention is to provide a device for the purpose defined which may readily be secured in position upon the dashboard of a buggy or other vehicle without marring the same or requiring any change in its structural arrangement, which in use shall be thoroughly effective in preventing the reins from falling to the ground, in which when the reinholding member is not in use it may be disposed of in such manner as not to present an obstruction, and which shall combine simplicity and cheapness of construction with high efficiency and durability in use and readiness of application to position.
With the above and other objects in View, as will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists, generally stated, in a rein-holder embodying an attaching member and a rein-holding member, the latter being hinged to the former, whereby when not in use it may be turned down, and thus not protrude above the edge of the dashboard.
The attaching member is by preference made of sheet metal stamped to the appropriate shape to cause it to conform both to the contour of the dashboard and also to the dashboard-frame rib, where one is employed, and is provided with means for attaching it to the body of the dashboard and to its upper edge. Said member also embodies means for effecting a hinged connection with the rein-holding member and with means for holding the latter member in inoperative position.
The rein-holding member is constructed, preferably, of resilient metal and' is provided with opposed yielding rein-clamping arms and with means to permit of its being readily combined with the attaching member.

In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts, there is illustrated one form of embodimentof the invention capable of carrying the same into practical operation, it being' understood that the elements therein exhibited may be varied or changed as to shape, proportion, and exact manner of assemblage without departing from the spirit thereof.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the inner side of the dashboard, exhibiting the rein-holder of the present invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation, the dashboard being shown in section. Fig. 3 is a perspective detached detail View of the rein-holding member. Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 4 4, Fig. 1, and looking in the direction of the ar- Fig. 5 is a perspective detail view of the blank of the attaching member before it is given its finished shape.
The attaching member (designated generally l) is made, preferably, from sheet metal and is provided with a relatively broad intermediate portion 2 and constricted terminal portions 3 and 4, the latter being provided with laterally-projecting extensions 5, constituting clip elements. rl`he member is longitudinally and transversely bowed-the former to make it conform to the ordinary shape of the buggy-dashboard and the latter to permit it to fit over the central dashboard-frame rib r. (Shown in section in Fig. 4.) The intermediate portion 2 of the member is provided with an approximately U-shaped slit 6 and an approximately spear-head-shaped slit 7, and the metal freed by the slit 6 is bent to form a hinge member 8, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and the metal freed by the slit 7 is bent at approximately right angles to the face of the member toform a lock or retaining device 9 to interlock with the rein-engaging arms of the rein-holding member to hold it in inoperative position, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1. rI he transverse bowing or bending of the attaching member terminates at the dotted line m, and for the remaining portion of its length the member is fiat and where the device is used on thin dashboardsis bent to form a hook 10, which embraces the upper edge of the dashboard, as shown in Fig. 2. Where the device is used on heavy wooden dashboards that are too thick for the hook, the same may be omitted and the upper end of the device be secured to the dashboard by a screw or nail passed through an orifice 11 in the terminal 3.
The rein-holding member (designated generally 12) is constructed from a single piece of resilient metal, preferably of steel wire, and is formed at its base with a loop 13 to engage the hinge member 8 and with two opposed rein-engaging arms 14, the terminals of which extend to and preferably bear upon `the member adjacent to the loop 13, the metal on each side of the loop being bent laterally and then upwardly on inward converging lines to form side members 15 and then bent sharply upon itself to form two upwardlycurved throat members 16 and thence downward to form the rein-engaging arms 14. The loop 13 is disposed at a slight angle to the length of the member 15, so that when in engagement with the hinge member 8 and when turned to operative position the rein-holding' member will occupy an approximately vertical plane. rlhe draft on the reins R will be in the direction of the arrow, and thus it will be seen that any strain will be transmitted from the rein-holding member adjacent to the loop onto the attaching member, so that any danger of the Vrein-holding member being forced outwardly will be positively obviated.
As beforestated, when the rein-holding member is not in use it is turned down to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig'. 1, and the locking device 9 will flex the rein-engaging arms 14, and these will then spring in back of the head of the locking device, thus firmly holding the rein-holding member against rattling or against moving away from the dashboard.
Each clip element 5 is provided with an orifice 17, and these are engaged by screws 18 to pass through the dashboard and engage a clip 19, being counterpart in shape of the clip formed on the attaching member, and by this means the device will be securely held in position.
It will be seen from the foregoing description that although the rein-holding device of this invention is exceedingly simple of construction it combines in a practical and ready manner all the essentials necessary for the production of a thoroughly-effective device, and, further, that owing to the simplicity of the construction of the parts liability of derangement or damage in use is reduced to a minimum.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is- 1. A device of the class described comprising an attaching member provided with a locking device and a rein-holding member having hinged connection with the attaching member and provided with resilient rein engaging arms adapted to engage with the locking device when in inoperative position.
2. A device of the class described comprising an attaching member provided at one terminal with clip elements, at its other terminal with a dashboard-engaging loop or hook, and intermediate of its ends with a hinge member, and a rein-holding member comprising a base to engage the hinge member and resilient reinengaging arms.
3. A device of the class described comprising an attaching member provided at one terminal with clip elements, at its other terminal with a dashboard-engaging loop or hook, and intermediate of its ends with a hinge member and with a locking device, and a rein-holding member having a part to engage the hinge member, and resilient rein-engaging arms to engage the locking device when in inoperative position.
4. A device of the class described comprising an attaching member provided at one end with integral clip elements, at the other end with an integral attaching hook or loop, and intermediate of its ends with an integral hinge element and a locking device, and a rein-holding member having its base furnished with a loop to engage the hinge member and provided with oppositely-disposed resilient rein-engaging arms adapted when in inoperative position to engage the locking device.
