RElN-GUARD.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 794,319, dated July 11, 1905.

Application filed September 22, 1900. Serial No. 30,811.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, THoMAs E. ScHUMrnRr, M. D., a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Shreveport, in the parish of Caddo and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rein- Gruards, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to harness, and particularly to that class known as rein-guards, and has for its object to provide a rein-guard for harness-breeching in order to prevent the reins from falling to the side of the horse.

A further object of the invention is to provide a rein guard which can be attached against removal by any ordinary purchaser.

Furthermore, the object of the invention is to provide means for preventing rotation of the guard, so that when once applied with the opening facing the terret the strain or pull of the rein incident to its use cannot change the position of the guard.

Finally, the object of the invention is to provide a rein-guard which will be simple in construction, efficient and satisfactory in use, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.

With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.

In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a harness with the invention applied. Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of the rein-guard detached, showing the elements comprising same in detail; and Fig. 3 is a view in elevation showing the parts assembled.

In the drawings, 1 indicates a harness-saddle; 2, the hip-straps, which being of ordinary construction need not be described in detail.

The attachment or rein-guard-comprises in plate is provided with upturned flanges 5 on its sides to embrace the edges of the hip-strap. The base-plate is also provided with a series of spurs 6, extending from the upper surface and which are embedded in the leather when the guard is applied. Centrally of the baseplate I provide a threaded stud 7, which fits in a hole formed in the hip-strap. After this plate is fastened with the stud protruding above the upper surface of the hip-strap a plate or washer 8, having a central aperture to receive the stud, is applied to the upper surface of the hip-strap, said plate provided with spurs 9, which are embedded in the leather for anchoring said plate or washer.

The upper surface of the plate or washer is provided with cam-recesses 10, which terminate in shoulders 11, fora purpose to be hereinafter described.

The upper section of the guard consists of a shank 12, terminating at its upper end in a loop or ring 13 and terminating at its lower end in a base 14. The under surface of the base has struck therefrom spring-tongues 15, which are adapted to depend within the recesses of the plate or washer in order to prevent turning of the shank after the parts have been assembled and screwed in place.

By the use of this invention the reins are not likely to be caught by the switching of the tail of the horse. Furthermore, should the reins accidentally drop the guard would retain them within easy reach of the occupant ofthe vehicle, which advantage will be fully appreciated.

The construction, operation, and advantages will, it is thought, be understood from the foregoing description, and it is noted that various changes in the proportion and details of construction may be resorted to for successfully carrying the invention into practice without departing from the scope of the claim.
