Description

NO. 792,226. 7 PATENTED JUNE 13, 1905.
P. H. MELANDER & P. JAOQUOT.
SGISSORS AND SHEARS.
APPLICATION FILED nov. a. 1904.
UNTTED STATES Patented June 13, 1905.
PATENT OE IcE.
SCISSORS OR SH EARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 792,226, dated June 13, 1905. Application filed November 3, 1904. Serial No. 231,270.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, PETER H. MELANDER and PETER JAC UOT, citizens of the United States, residing at Tacoma, in the county of Pierce and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scissors or Shears; and we do declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in shears; and the object of the invention is to produce a device of this charactor in which a draw-cut is afforded while the shears are in operation; and it comprises a blade carrying a pin to which is swiveled a flanged guide-block having a play in a slot of the second blade of the shears and in the provision of pivotal-link connections between the two blades, whereby as the two blades are opened and closed one edge is caused to draw against the edge of the other blade.
The invention consists, further, in various details of construction and in combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
Our invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of our improved shears, showing the same closed. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the shears open, and Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view on line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates one of the blades of the shears, having a pivot-pin A mounted on one side thereof, and B is a guideblock having a flange B at one end and swiveled upon said pivot-pin. C designates the second blade of the shears, having an elongated rectangular -outlined slot D therein, adapted to receive said swiveled block, the flange of said block overhanging the edges of said slot and adapted to hold the two blades together and allow the slotted blade to move longitudinally as it swings closed or opens.
E designates a link pivotally connected at E to the blade A, while its other end is pivotally connected to a pivot-pin F, mounted upon the second blade 0.
By the construction shown it will be observed that as the blades are brought together one of the same will be given a slight longitudinal movement, causing a draw-cut of the cutting edges, while the reverse movement is caused as the jaws are opened.
While we have shown a particular detailed construction of apparatus illustrating our shears, it will be understood that we may vary the construction of the same, if desired, without in any way departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A pair of shears comprising two blades, one of said blades being provided with an elongated slot, a screw carried by the other blade, an apertured block mounted upon the shank portion of said screw and having flanges overhanging the opposite longitudinal edges of said slot, a link pivotally connected at one end to the slotted blade and the other end pivoted to the screw-carrying blade adjacent to the cutting edge thereof and beyond the slot in the other blade, as set forth.
In testimony whereof we hereunto aflflx our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
PETER H. MELANDER. PETER J ACQUOT.
