PATENT OFFICE.
SMOKERS ARTICLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 791,454, dated June 6, 1905.
Application filed January 22,1904. Serial No. 190,121.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES M. A. DARRAGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smokers Articles, of which the followingisa clear, full, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improvement in smokers articles, the same comprising particularly an improvement for quickly extinguishing the butts of cigarettes.
The object of my invention is to provide a construction Which will be substantially smoke-tight, so as to quickly extinguish the butt and prevent the escape of smoke therefrom.
My invention will be defined in the claim.
In the drawings accompanying herewith I have shown the construction which is now preferred by me.
Figure 1 is a side elevation, Fig. 2 a plan, and Fig. 3 a sectional elevation, of my device.
When smoking, it is desirable to have a convenient place in which to put butts of cigars, cigarettes, &c., where they will be extinguished and their odor and smoke be kept from permeating the room. I have secured this result by the construction herein shown, in which a receptacle is provided having means for maintaining it normally closed and smoke-tight.
1 is the butt-receptacle, and 2 its cover, which snugly fills the upper end of the receptacle and is hung on pivots 3 and is provided with a counterweight by which it is automatically closed and normally held closed. I also pro= vide ledges or flanges 5 6 in position to engage, respectively, the top and bottom surfaces of said cover, thereby securing'a substantially smoke-tight closure. Each of these ledges extends from one pivot to the other in onedirection only.
A slight pressure will suflice to tilt or rock the cover to permit the insertion of a cigar or cigarette butt, and the counterweight will automatically return the cover to place. I preferably mount this butt-receiver upon a base 7 and may also provide a receptacle 8 for loose matches and another, 9, for a box of matches and cup-like hollows or recesses 10 on the base margin for the temporary receptionof lighted cigars or cigarettes.
What I claim is A butt-receiver consisting of a round box closed at the bottom and having-a round cover therein below the upper edge thereof, said cover being provided with diametrically oopposite pivots and a counterweight for automatically returning it to the closed position, said box having an upper and a lower ledge adapted to engage respectively with the top and bottom sides of said cover when closed and each extending substantially from one pivot around to the other pivot so as to form substantially a smoke-tight closure, said lower ledge being on the same side of said pivots as said counterweight, the internal walls of said box below said pivots being substantially straight and substantially the same distance apart as the diameter of said cover, and the bottom of said box being removed from said pivots a distance greater than the radius of said cover. i
' Signed at New York, N. Y., this th day of January, 1904.
