Letters Patent No. 7 9,128', dat@ June 23,1868'.
IMPROVED QUARTER-BOOT FOEHORSES.
tite tlgthnie wenn ti in than tettet minut :mi .mating pnt ni the time;
TO ALL PERSONS TQ WHOM THESE PRESENTS MAY `COME:
Beit known that I, W1LLIAM H. JONES, of Boston, in the county of Su'oll, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Quarter-Boot for Horses; and I do hereby declare the saine to be `fully described in the .following specication, and represented in the accompanying drawingaof Whh-f I Figure l is a top view,
Figure 2 a side elevation,
Figure 3 a longitudinal section, and
Figure 1.1. a transverse vsection of it.'
Figure 5 is a bottom view of it.V
'The purpose of the boot'is to prevent a horse, while trotting fast, from cutting or bruising the heels` or lower joint of the fore leg, by what istermed overreaching" of the .hoof of the hind leg.
In carrying ont my invention, I form -t-he bootnot'only vwith a 'back-rest, to support it on the top of the heel, but with an internal projection, lto iit into the hollow of Vthe heel ot' the foot, so as to prevent`the boot fromturning around or rising on the hoof; and I also make the boot with one or more grooves or recessesg'oing `around it, as hereinafter described, to receive the'fastening-strap, in order that the outer'surface of such strap may be dush or even with that of the boot.
The groove'or grooves for receiving .the strap, also ,serve to hold the strap place on the boot, and prevent it from being torn oi the 4heel of the bootby the rear foot of a horse when the boot may' be in use. By bringe ing the strap or straps Hush with the outer surface ofthe boot,` they are prevented from doing injury to the knee or leg next to the leg on which the boot may be worn.
Forconvenience of forming the boot, andto impart to it a proper elasticity, I nionld it from India. rubber or gutta `perche, it being formed, generally, as shown'a't A, in the drawings, and with a heeLprojection, a,
The quarters I faceon'their inner surfaces withstrips, b'b, of canvas, cemented on them,'in order to'prevent them froni being tornby the strap-rivets e c. v
The fastening-strap'B, as shownin the drawings, is Tureated, or ronde with four branches, d d, e e, proceeding from the inner or heel 'part,f, lbuckles g g' being fixed to two ofthe said branches, e e. lThe other twoA branches, i al, are to be punctured with holes, in'order that they may be buckled to Vthe-'branches e e.
The boot haslnain andbranch grooves, g' h h, made inand through itsfoutjer surface,- to receive thestrap and its branches, sucligrooves' being as represented, and for the purposes hereinbefore mentioned.
The back-rest offthc boot, sho wn at lc, by Vresting on the upper parts of the heel of the hoof, prevents the bootj-from dropping oil'or slipping down Von the 'hoot'. The. projeotiona, by entering the recess of the heel 'of extended from the middle of the inner surface of the heel.
the hoof, 'prevents the boot*fromzrising` upward, as Well as from turning about on the heel. The back-rest supi ports the projection a in its proper place on .the heel.
Ido not claixn'a quarter-boot, as made of leathenand provided. with straps in the' ordinary way. .-I claim the quarter-bocinas made with oneorniore grooves, arranged as described, in its outer surface, and especially about itsh'eel7 st lclrbeing to lreceive the fastening-strap or strap sas set forth.
I alsoelaim the arrangement of ithe fasteningstrapyithin agroove going aroundthe heel andl through either o r both the sides or quarters of the boot, in manner substantially asspeciiefl.
I also clairn theboot, las made withV a heel-projection, a, and the back-resti@ arranged' as specified. i I also claim the arrangement-of the canvas quarter-facings with the shoe and the 4strap-rivets, in -manner Witnesses:
