IMPROVEMENT IN WEAR-PLATES FOR BOOTS AND SHOES.

To vALLwHoM 1T MAY CONCERN:v
Beit known that I, SIMON MINGE-s, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe, arid Sta-te of New York, have invented a certain'new and useful Improvement in Wear-Plates for Boots and Shoes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference beig had to the accompanying drawings, malging part of this specication. *t 'l I Figure 1 is a perspective view of .a shoe provided withmyl improvement.
`Figure 2, a perspective viewv of the wear-plate detached.
Figure 3, a vertical section of the-toe of a shoe withthe wear-plate attached.
' Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in allthe figures.
' My invention consistshin aweanplate for boots v,and shoes, combining' adownwardly-projecting rim for covering and enclosing the sole, and an upwardly-projecting shield for protecting the upper leather at the toe; also, the combination, with a. wear-plate enclosing the`foot, of curved cross-pieces, and a-dove-tailed'bearing1 .which will allow expansion of the plate and retain it securely, as hereinafter set forth.
l As represented in the -drawings, Anis the'bettom ofa'boot or shoe, and B the wear-plate, attachedthereto, vextending around the toe and sole, preferably'as far` as the hollow of the foot.. The wear-plate consists of a vertical rim, a a a, a dove-tailed bearing or bearing, and cross-connections b b', extending from side to side 'of the rim at suitable distances apart, as shown. l l Y The rim a a a projects downward vertically suiciently to cover the edge of theieather, which is fitted ,with'inc1-eaa' to the bottom., making the whole flush, as shown in iigsl 1 and 3, so asgto receive the wearand protect the leather: It` also projects upward atlthe toe, so as to form a shield, z, iig. 3, which serves to protect theuppcr leather. i Y I The bearing or bearings b, and the connections b b', are iitted between thelsoles, as in iig. 3, and secured there tohcld the wear-plate in' place. The bearings are made of the dove-tailed form laterally, and the wedging form vertically, as shown. lThe connections are made curved backward, as indicated, and also, ifdesired, made slightly concave downward, toy tit the transverse rounding form of the bottom of the-foot.
' This wear-plate insures several important advantagesy. The projection of the rim downward, so as to cover the edge of the bottom sole at thetoe'and sides, protects the leather, and, in a great degree, prevents wear at. the points subjected tothe.greatestn action." -The sole is thus, as it were, encased at the edges. The shield as, in like manner, prevents wear to the upper leather at the toe. These two parts, aand z, therefore, serve as a perfect protection to the whole toe. The bearing or bearings b at the toe, inserted 'between the soles, cannot be withdrawn, especially when s ewed,l nailed, or pegged fast on each side`of the dove-tail.' The cross-connections b b', being embedded in the leather, eifectuallyhold the body ofthe plate firmly; and not only this, but their .curved form enables them toA expand or contract the sides of the rim at pleasure to t theoutline'of the sole by .simply bending or straightening them, which is a matter of much importance in plates iitting aroupd the sides oft-he sole. I am not `aware that this e'ect ht'is ever before been produced.A The extension of the rim round to .the bottom of the foot protects that whole portion there the greatest wear comes, vand preserves thesole to tho best advantage. y
What I claimias my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, in the wear-plate B, of the 'rim a, covering or enclosing the sole,"and the shield a: protecting the upper, as herein set forth.
2. The combination, with the wear-plate B, ofthe curved cro`ss-connections b b', for expanding vthe rim, and the dove-tailed bearing or bearings for shielding the toe7 as herein set forth.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto signed my'name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
vSIMON MINGE'S.
