Description
UNITED STATES GEORGE A. MnNsEIELD, OF Boston, MAssAOHUsETTs.
. iMPROvEMENT iN BOOTS AND sacas.
i Specict-iou forming part of Letters PatentNo: ii, dated lOctober 1, 1861.
'To atl whom it may concern;
Be it known that l, GEORGE A. MANsEIELD,
l hoot and shoe dealer, of Boston, county of Suffolk, and Stateof Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Manufacture ot Boots and'Shoes; 'and l hereby declare that -the following description, with the accompan ying drawings, forms a full` clear, and exact specification thereof.
. .My 'invention and improvement consists in theintroduction of an intermediate 4metallic sole or part sole between the outer and inner soles of the boot or shoe for the purpose of preventing dampness from reaching the footl through the sole, and increasing the stabilit-.y and durability' of the boot or shoe. I also form at the toe or anterior part of the sole or part sole a metallic welt, which I term the toe-guardffas it effeetually prevents .wearing or stubbing out the toe, as it is termed, said Welt-or toe-guard extending across the toe-v and for a short distance more or less down therside of the boot or shoe.
The accompanying drawings represent my improvements.
' Similar letters represent similar parts in all the views.
Figure l is a side elevation of a shoe with my intermediate metallic sole and toe-guard.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of said shoe. Fig. 3 is' an independent top View of the intermediate metallic sole with the toe- .guard formed thereon. In the drawings, a represents the outer sole; l), the inner sole; c,'the intermediate metallic.
sole or part sole; d, the metallic welt or ,toeguard. It may be observed that I' usually form the toe-guard by rolling or foldinga porwltion of the metallic sole over a piece of lnetallie wire e, as shown in section inv Fig. 2, though this toe-guard orwelt canjbe formed by rollingor folding a portion of the metallic sole over itself one, two,th ree,'or more times,
as shown atf in the sectional detail,'Fig. 4,0r
by soldering on a separate piece of metal, as
shown at g inthe sectional detail, Fig. 5.
In construction I first last the boot or shoe byvplacing the inner sole on the last and4 drawing the edges of the vamp over itin the usual manner. I then place u'ponit iur proper position the intermediate metallic sole or part sole formed either with or withoutthe welted' 'protect-ing toe-guard, andthen place over all the outer sole, and fasten by one or more,
rows of nails or pins driven through all three of the soles, or if it is-desired to make asewed boot or Ashoe the metallic sole vcan becut a little smaller all around than the outer'sole;
and thus admit of the outerv sole being vstitched outside the metallic sole to an ,indeof cold and dampness, as that principle is ali ready secured to lWilliam J Lyman bya patent granted June 7. 1859i; but
The metallic guard or Welt construct-ed substantially as herein described, and extending either completely around vthe boot or shoe-or being used'only at the toeor such other parts as may be liable to uncommon external Wear and`.abrasion, said guard. or Welt being applied either to the outer edge vot' one of said Lymans metallic insoles or'indep'endentl'y of the principle of his invention merely estv tending inward 'a sufficient' distance to re ceive the pegging, sewing, or nailing..
'GEO. fn. MANSFIELD.
Vifitnesses: i LUTHER BRIGGS, Jr., BENJAMIN P. CHANDLER.
