To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, CHARLES A. BAT- TREALL, residing at St.'Joseph, in the county of Buchanan and State of Missouri, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoes, of which the following is a specification. V

This invention, which generically relates to improvements in foot wear, more particularly has for its object to provide improvements that add certain reinforcing features and durability to the common form'of flexible work shoes.

As is well known the old form of work shoe of rigid construction has been largely supplanted by a flexible welted sole shoe, and experience has shown that the flexible welted sole shoes are peculiarly liable to crack at the lower part of the vamp, where it is attached to the sole, owing first, to the strain at such point, and second the influence of acids in barn yard manure.

My invention especially has for its purpose to provide certain improvements in shoes of the character stated, in the nature of a reinforcement at the weak or cracking points thereof, that extends the full length of the shoe vamp, is attached to the said vamp by stitching along the top edge, and by fastening the bottom portion under the toe cap at the'front end and under the quarter at the other end, the entire lower edge of the reinforcement being underseamed with the regular vamp portion of the shoe.

Another object of my invention is the provision of certain reinforcing features in a working shoe structure of the general character stated, that adds to the durability of the shoe, overcomes the tendency of the flexible soled working shoeto crack in the vamp above the sole stitching and protects the vamp from acids, renders the shoe practically water-proof and well adapted for the rough usage incident in the wearing of working shoes.

I attain the above objects in a shoe construction that embodies the peculiar features and novel combination of the parts hereinafter fully explained, specifically pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:

Fig. 4: is a detail cross section, partly in perspective, parts being broken away, of a portion of the shoe, and illustrating the manner in which the reinforcing vamp member is inseamed with the regular vamp portion of the shoe.

In carrying out my invention, the shoe, which may be made of standard shapes, comprises a flexible sole that includes the body or sole member proper 1, the welt 2, the front or toe'cap 3, the rear or quarter section 4, and the intermediate or vamp section 5, all arranged and joined with the flexible welted sole in a manner well known in this art.

The essential or novel feature of my construction of working shoe lies in the provision of a supplemental vamp portion 6, one for each sideof the shoe and located over the weak or cracking points of the shoe. 1

o The supplemental vamp portions 6 that constitute the reinforcing means hereinbefore referred to and located at each side of the shoe, extend the full length of the shoe vamp 5 upon which they are secured in the manner best shown in Fig. 2, by reference to which it will be seen their upper ends are secured by stitching 60, their front and rear ends 61-62 extended respectively under the toe cap 3, and the quarter or counter 4, and secured by the stitching 63 that secures the said cap andthe quarter to the vamp 5, the entire length of the lower edge 64: of the supplemental vamp portions being inseamed, as at 65, with the regular vamp 5, as is clearly shown in- Figs. 3 and 4; of the drawing.

By reason of providing a shoe with supplemental vamp portions and connecting them with the flexible welted sole in the manner shown and described, adds durability to the shoe, overcomes tendency of the flexible sole of a shoe of the kind stated to crack immediately above the sole stitching and protects the shoe Vamps from acids,

renders the'shoe practically water tight and with men who stand in mud, manure and the like in their work, the leather soon rots at the bottom of the vamp near the ball of the foot. WVith the main shoe vamp extended down to the welt of the shoe with an overlay or supplemental vamp covering located therein as described and shown, provides two thicknesses of leather, the outer layer or thickness getting the worst of the 1 wear trom the mud, acids and the like, thereby materially protecting and increasing the life of the regular vamp portion of the shoe. 4

In a welted shoe in which is included a ramp portion, a toe cap and quarters; reinforcing memhers located one each on the opposite sides of the vamp between the shoe quarters and the toe cap, whose lower edges are inseamed with-the vamp portion of the shoeto the welt and insole and whose upper edges are stitched to the said vamp portion, the opposite ends of the said reinforcing members being extended under'the toe cap and the shoe quarters and secured by the stitching that secures thecap and the quarter portions to the shoe Vamp.
